Community Ball Park/Recreation Area

Currently the youth in our community only get one form of physical activity in the winter months, and that is our cultural center which transforms into a gymnasium at season end. With limited funding, the community has been attempting to build a baseball diamond over the past 6 years. The diamond will be rejunevating an old dump site that was cleaned up and landfill has been hauled in over the past 6 years. Our plan is to not take the next 10 years to complete it but to complete it before our youth grow old and the community becomes inactive.

The Recreation Park will serve as a place for people of all ages to come and enjoy at all times of the year with many flowers, shrubs, baseball diamond, picnic tables and a small playground for the children. In order for our community to currently access a baseball diamond, it involves a commute of 20 minutes from the community, with limited access, due to local leagues using it for most of the year.

Many of our youth are only active at school, and very few are enrolled in school sports. The Recreation Park is hoped to assist all ages in full recreation opportunities and team sports as well as community outings and events for all times of the year.

Being a First Nation community who is constantly trying to conserve energy and have sustainable resources, the Recreation Park is planned to have solar energy to provide lighting for the entire park which will ensure safety and security. We wish to also include a chain linked fence along the perimeter to ensure that wild animals will not enter the field, as well as fencing along the parking area to ensure the playground area is safe from vehicles entering.

This project will serve to benefit the community as a whole and will involve all ages in the construction from beginning to end. The project will also provide some employment opportunities for those who have the skills and equipment involved in construction.

Volunteers will ensure that the grounds will be kept clean and well taken care of. The L'sitkuk Youth Environment group will assist in the planting of shrubs and flowers which will serve as a great feeding and resting ground for birds as well as butterflies and other species of nature.

A small picnic are will be constructed to serve as a shelter from the sun, a place to sit and watch the events taking place, or a resting spot to enjoy watching nature.

The baseball diamond will also serve as a cultural purpose for the cultural events such as pow-wows and gatherings.

If this project is chosen to win, the money will be used for the following; Hiring a tandem truck to bring in some soil

  Hiring a team to finish clearing a portion of land for further development of the playground area and baseball diamond.

  Purchasing sod and gravel for the inside of the diamond

  Purchasing lumber for the dugouts and Picnic area

  Concrete for the dugouts as well as fence posts and playground equipment

  Purchase chain link fencing for baseball diamond as well as playground area

  The necessary field equipment (bases, pitching rubber) and surrounding structures such as fences
