A New Community Centre in the Heart of the Warden Corridor
The Warden Community Centre is an exciting new development in southwest Scarborough that will be a hub for sport development and community engagement. The Warden Community Centre sports a gym with walls of windows, an outdoor basketball court and mini-soccer field, and innovative new green energy components. Contributing to these facilities and supporting the first ever programs at the Warden Community Centre is a tremendous opportunity for the Aviva Community Foundation to touch the lives of over 120,000 Torontonians in an area densely populated by children and youth, in a facility that is being built to be the most energy efficient building in Toronto.
The Warden Community is one of the fastest growing communities in Toronto and comprises an unique blend of first and second generation Canadians. By the end of 2010, we will have seen an influx of over 4,000 new residents to the area as a result of the development of the Warden corridor. Presently, the ward of over 60,000 people, receives almost 11% of Social Services allocation in the city, and is also home to a high percentage of the 13% of new immigrants who make Scarborough their home in Toronto. The multitude of cultures and diverse needs have been serviced to date through a network of community facilities spread out in different locales of Scarborough. With the advent of the new 26,000 square ft. Warden Community Centre, many of these services can now be consolidated and provided at one central location which will maximize city resources and improve programming.
Features of the Warden Community Centre
The new 26,000 square ft. Community Centre will be a hub of recreational and community programming for Scarborough Southwest. A host of community consultations and public meetings helped to define the requirements for the facility which includes a diversity of programmable spaces:
• Double gym suitable for varsity play • Outdoor basketball court • Outdoor mini soccer turf field • ‘B’ class fitness facility • Multipurpose room with outdoor amphitheater seating • Three activity rooms • Dedicated child care space
A LEED Silver Facility
As a LEED silver facility, the Warden Community Centre will have the following green components:
• A geothermal system that will heat and cool the facility • A green roof • Solar panels to power low energy lighting • Light-emitting diode (LED) and natural lighting throughout the facility.
A Partnership Opportunity
Supporting the new Warden Community Center will position the Aviva Community Foundation as a strong supporter of grass-roots sports and community programming in Toronto. Support of $250,000 will allow us to build a playground & waterplay structure for the pre-school area of the centre and will support start-up operating costs for new child care and pre-school programming at the centre.
The Warden Community Centre is steps away from the Warden subway station and will draw users from across the area. The centre wil be a hub of community activity that will build and strengthen a sense of community in the Warden area and foster community ownership of public space.
Aviva child care programs could support the healthy childhood development of thousands of children of diverse backgrounds. We invite you to partner with us on the Warden Community Center project to help us build a healthy and vibrant community. Vote for the Warden Community Centre today!
