"Now, does the world have a belly button? I can't get this out of my head! 'Cause if it turns up in my yard, I'll tickle it so hard, 'Til the whole world's gonna laugh to wake the dead."
--1972, Jesse Winchester, from the LP 'Third Down, 110 To Go'*
And since the earth's belly button has yet to be seen, our plan is to induce it to pop up here in the meadow on Mockingbird Hill Farm.
We would plant a two-acre wildflower meadow and cut a contemplative labyrinth through it, the intent being that folks would ‘trance’ through it, invoking peace and wellness for all. It would be a spectacular burst of color, energy, and beauty, undulating over the gently changing contour of the land.
The labyrinth design that we will use has been found in ancient cultures worldwide. The geometry itself is calming, and the design has been used in both conventional and traditional healings. Many of the wildflowers are medicine plants used by first nations: just walking through them and brushing against them is said to increase wellness. The path to global peace is through inner peace.
There would be clusters of seating within the labyrinth so folks could rest, meditate, and heal. We would build a cedar-log and Lake-Superior-shore-stone gazebo as a gathering center at the trailhead (both mediums of construction considered grounding and sacred) with a fire pit within to send prayers wafting skyward on the smoke.
Mockingbird Hill Farm offers itself as the perfect site. The Farm itself is connecting--on the cusp of the wilderness yet within the city limits, a horse-drawn farm reminiscent of the past and interpreting to those of today. It is a tranquil place where time and calm seem tethered.
The Farm contributes substantively to local cultural, recreational, and educational values and is acknowledged and treasured by the community.
It is only natural and perhaps ordained that we do this.
The wildflower peace and wellness labyrinth . . . Mother Earth's belly button will be to the benefit of all . . . will attract everyone . . . just as it will butterflies and bees . . .

Great idea, the combination of of historic preservation, landscape preservation and outdoor recreation all combine to show the Power of Place. The farm on the Rural/Urban interface links the forests to the downtown and could be a major greenway link, a sustainable landscape for nature and people. Supporting this project would do a lot toward guiding a fragmented landscape toward connectivity. Local and regional land use agencies could use this project as an example of sustainable land use planning when working with local government. Could not be a better project
