Culture and Well Being Centre for Northwestern Nova Scotia.
Citizens, concerned that one of the oldest remaining heritage buildings in the seaside town of Parrsboro, NS will be lost to the community, are rallying to preserve an element of our collective heritage by creating a culture and wellness centre for future generations. The project enjoys strong public support from within the region. The last three years has been very exciting as not only have we defined the architectural concept and developed and broadened our audience base but we also have recently put a manger of development into place.
The population of our region is primarily youth and the retired and it is with this demographic in mind that we have developed our business plan and programming profile. Not only will we be programming events of cultural diversity from classic to pop to indy through theatre, dance, music, and workshops in the arts, we also will be offering opportunities in wellness disciplines: exercise and holistic activities (yoga, tai chi, etc.) and alternative health therapy opportunities. Our community of ten thousand people is mostly rural with the central community of Parrsboro at its core.
The multipurpose nature of the centre will have a positive impact on all age groups in the region, not just the central community, providing a meeting space, a performing space, alternative health care in addition to augmenting the recreation spaces currently available to all residents. Initial indications are that a fully upgraded centre, relying on geothermal and solar energy and designed with the latest energy efficient technology available, will be of service to the community and the region for many years to come.
With the help of Aviva and the support of the Canadian community we will put Aviva’s funds to work in the following way. There are two components. Our project is huge for our region and we have to proceed in an orderly and responsible manner to ensure complete success.
First, we have finally arrived on the doorstep of our final fundraising push to fulfill our vision. The one remaining step before we enter that phase is to complete our architectural design on which to base the campaign. The concept on which the final design will be based can be seen at http://www.thehall.ca/renovations/conceptual-plan/
Second and equally importantly, we feel we need to reinforce the support from our community. It has been a very patient and supportive community but we sense a need from it to see results. To this end we would employ part of the funds toward elements of exterior restoration. Nothing can carry our intentions forward more obviously than restoring the exterior cladding and painting with original heritage colours .
With these two elements secured we feel we will be in a great position to move ahead and complete this great leap forward for the people of our region.
Please refer to our website at www.thehall.ca for additional pictures and information.

In the two-and-a-half years since I moved to Parrsboro, I've been to at least 60 events & activities at the Band Hall. Volunteering with the Parrsboro Band Association has made me part of this community. I haven't felt "from away" for a long time now.

My family has a long history in Parrsboro and I would love to see the hall saved, I remember as a child running to the post office to beat my sister to get the mail there. I would love to see pins or buttons made with the save the hall and have them for sale as fund raisers , I would certainly buy one or more and wear them proudly. Maggie Phinney

I learned to play trumpet at the Band Hall, joined the PCB, took part in all night rockathons and more in that place. A lot of good memories- that should be shared with generations to come. I think Bernie would approve of the efforts being put forth here!!! :)

Not unlike you Riley -- I learned a lot of things in that Band Hall (and most of them had something to do with music)! Honestly, many of my formative years were spent there -- much of the time spent learning to play the Baritone Horn and the rest of the time learning how to be part of a team and, more importantly, how to be a decent human being. Thanks Bernie ;-) I am confident that if we band together (pardon the pun) we will be able to keep the Hall open and in doing so ensure that future generations get the same opportunities to learn about themselves and realize their potential.

Yup - lots of memories at the band hall - my elem. & high school years would not have been the same without it! I learned to play clarinet and saxophone there... the band hall doubled as a multi-purpose space for us the year our gym was close due to vandalism - we held dances and assemblies there! I remember going to Christmas Tea & Sales and preforming and attending concerts. Not to mention it is a building with loads of history and lot of future potential! We can do this :) Amherst got TSN and helped save the YMCA - Parrsboro can get Aviva to " Save the Hall"

The Parrsboro Citizen's Band Hall is an artifact and a symbol of the spirit of community led by the Parrsboro Cirizen's Band, the longest running community band in Canada still playing (estb.1890?) , This longevity is an amazing thread that should not be broken, because it is community music making that will save us in the end. The PCB's survival and the expansion of its mandate to include a cultural centre relies on a workable facility. Vote!!

This historic landmark of a building must be saved and restored. As a boy growing up in Parrsboro in the 50's and 60's this was thee community center at the time. It was where we met and drilled for Sea Cadets. It was where the townspeople gathered to watch Eastern Canada's version of the WWF - World Wrestling Federation. It is a place where you could go and watch country & western musical groups perform and watch stage productions of Christmas pageants. Parrsboro desparately needs this building as a truly dedicated central community center and it is my hope that the Save the Hall organization group are successful being awarded much needed funding in this unique promotion campaign.

With almost 48 hours remaining in this round, I have to say we've built alot of momentum in the past few days. I'm staying positive that our submission, which has been carefully authored and concisely presented, will still garnish the attention of the Aviva organization. I am certain our desire to improve the community is clear and the impact it has already have- and could have for generations to come- is significant. Let's keep it up!!!

We have place in Parrsboro where we spend some time in the summer. We're constantly impressed by the high quality of cultural events offered in the community and the majority of those are organized by the Hall. Their efforts to expand on what they can offer to the town are more than commendable. There is certainly a lack of opportunities for physical activities and if they manage to get the renovation and such done then it would be a real plus. When we go back home (we live in the US) we always talk about what a gem of a place it is and how it would be great if some organization here could do the kinds of things the hall is doing for Parrsboro. We think our friends are jealous. They ask us why we don't just move there. We would if we could!

I've attended events at this hall. It is a piece of history that has made and is a part of Parrsboro, N.S. It holds many stories that should be told to those who live and visit the town. It has architectural importance. Keep this piece of history alive and well!

Brenda Wheaton Thanks so much for the unbelievable support in the last few days.Just think what we could have done if we had started in October like the other worthy projects in this competition. This will be such a wonderful addition to Parrsboro and area. Just think of the extra jobs it will bring to a small town like Parrsboro with a center that is open 12 months of the year. The restaurants, B & B's, and motel will have to hire extra staff instead of closing for the winter!! We are in 19th place and we need to stay there. Anyone that can work a phone please do so. A couple of hundred more votes will help us to stay where we are!! Many,Many Thanks! Brenda Burke Wheaton
