Culture and Well Being Centre for Northwestern Nova Scotia.

Citizens, concerned that one of the oldest remaining heritage buildings in the seaside town of Parrsboro, NS will be lost to the community, are rallying to preserve an element of our collective heritage by creating a culture and wellness centre for future generations. The project enjoys strong public support from within the region. The last three years has been very exciting as not only have we defined the architectural concept and developed and broadened our audience base but we also have recently put a manger of development into place.

The population of our region is primarily youth and the retired and it is with this demographic in mind that we have developed our business plan and programming profile. Not only will we be programming events of cultural diversity from classic to pop to indy through theatre, dance, music, and workshops in the arts, we also will be offering opportunities in wellness disciplines: exercise and holistic activities (yoga, tai chi, etc.) and alternative health therapy opportunities. Our community of ten thousand people is mostly rural with the central community of Parrsboro at its core.

The multipurpose nature of the centre will have a positive impact on all age groups in the region, not just the central community, providing a meeting space, a performing space, alternative health care in addition to augmenting the recreation spaces currently available to all residents. Initial indications are that a fully upgraded centre, relying on geothermal and solar energy and designed with the latest energy efficient technology available, will be of service to the community and the region for many years to come.

With the help of Aviva and the support of the Canadian community we will put Aviva’s funds to work in the following way. There are two components. Our project is huge for our region and we have to proceed in an orderly and responsible manner to ensure complete success.

First, we have finally arrived on the doorstep of our final fundraising push to fulfill our vision. The one remaining step before we enter that phase is to complete our architectural design on which to base the campaign. The concept on which the final design will be based can be seen at http://www.thehall.ca/renovations/conceptual-plan/

Second and equally importantly, we feel we need to reinforce the support from our community. It has been a very patient and supportive community but we sense a need from it to see results. To this end we would employ part of the funds toward elements of exterior restoration. Nothing can carry our intentions forward more obviously than restoring the exterior cladding and painting with original heritage colours .

With these two elements secured we feel we will be in a great position to move ahead and complete this great leap forward for the people of our region.
