The GTA is now the child poverty capital of Ontario where 50% of Ontario's children in poverty live in the GTA. That is up 44% from 1997. The average income of these families is $8,300.00 (2005 stat).
Lone parent families are inordinately burdened by poverty. Durham Region leads the GTA 61% of its children in poverty in 2005 lived in single parent families.

Our plan to alleviate child poverty in Durham Region. Open Arms targets this group by providing a network of friendships, mentorships, a supportive environment, building self-esteem and purpose through community involvement. We also provide a free store, birthday parties and Christmas gifts and dinner for those who would not have had it otherwise. Most of the people involved are volunteers and single parents who have come to a place of wanting to give back to the community what they themselves have received. These leaders have come to learn how to live a moral life through self-worth and how to love people back to life!

-Open Arms has given to 23 families a Christmas through our program which we call Flip Your Christmas. We look forward to more this year! - We have given birthday parties to children and a baby dedication this year! - We have delivered many grocieries and toiletries to families, given hundreds of rides including to foodbanks, social service meetings, appointments and church services. - Plus the free store has been open to all plus it offered to 4 families starting over again from a shelter including furniture, kitchen items, toiletries plus the store also has birthday decorations and gifts, shoes boots, coat, hats...too much to mention here. - We have babysat for kids so mom's could get an education. - We held a Valentine's dinner, a formal Christmas party and a Mother's Day pancake breakfast..... - There has been a spa day where the families had free haircuts and the mom's were pampered with a manicure. - The Young Adults group pastored by Derek Schneider at the Embassy, catered a chef cooked meal to the mom's which was located at the very elegant "White House" bed and breakfast in Oshawa. - We have lost only on mom this year to old habits but the prayer for her still continues...God never gives up!

Our long term vision is to create an Open Arms in every neighbourhood. One institution taking care of every neighbourhood is a costly endveavour so we created a plan that will impact child poverty by neighbourhood. Each neighbourhood in the low income areas will be taken care of through an Open Arms which is covered by a local church. We have developed a cirriculum which teaches out strategy and we plan to teach this strategy across Canada! We plan to teach this strategy beginning in January 2010. Already we have 2 more Open Arms locations being developed in Oshawa and another in Kelowna BC. But this is just the beginning!
