Madrona Farm is a productive, biologically diverse urban farm on Blenkinsop Road in Victoria, a rich agricultural area under strong development pressure. It is a prime illustration of successful local food production and ecological integrity.
The Friends of Madrona Society (FoMF) has entered into an agreement with The Land Conservancy of BC (TLC) to purchase Madrona Farm (see madronafarm.com for details). TLC's mission is to ensure that the agricultural productivity and ecological values of Madrona Farm are protected forever. The purchase of the farm by the community it serves, and its placement in a land trust protecting it for farming, will be the first of its kind in BC, part of the solution for the challenges of local food security and climate change.
Madrona Farm features Douglas Fir and Garry Oak ecosystems, four natural ponds and a wooded corridor of diverse native tree species. It is home to many species of birds, including great horned and screech owls, eagles, red-tailed hawks and herons.
Agro-ecology and organic food production demand high ecological standards. Plants and soil sequester carbon. Local, organic food production means fewer fossil fuels burned. Madrona Farm has eliminated the use of plastic bags; baskets are provided for customers.
The four irrigation ponds on the property are now used exclusively for habitat. About 6 of the 27 acres is forested according to its slopes and elevations. Carbon capture is the inevitable result of such conscious ecological management.
Last year, the farm produced over 175,000 pounds of food with virtually no waste or artificial inputs, using less than 700 litres of diesel. Now, Dave is training new farmers; will they have land to farm? Our farmlands are as endangered as any red-listed species.
Despite the property’s ALR designation, there is no requirement that the land be kept in food production. Unprotected, it could be purchased for use as a “hobby farm” or estate, and never again be used for growing food.
The loss of farmland and diverse habitat plays a huge role in climate change. Placing Madrona Farm in a TLC Trust protecting farmland for farming is one solution addressing climate change and food security. And it is not merely a dream to be created; it already exists. The nightmare would be to lose it. Please help us protect farmland – forever! As of November 10th over 4000 donations have been recieved and $864,000 raised. Another $836,000 are required by January 30 2010 to protect the Madrona Farm forever

Too many local food producing enterprises are being swallowed up by circuitous 'rezoning' and other nonproductive processes. Just look at what happened to all that wonderful growing area on the Fraser delta being carpeted with tract housing never to grow food again. We don't want the same thing happening here. Save what little we have left. Stop the dependency on California produce and it's inherently huge carbon footprint! We need to be able to feed ourselves, it's only logical, we've already given up far too much, let's not give up any more. Save the farmland and the farmers who work it!

This is an amazing farm that produces an incredible amount of food to local residents (the farm stand sells out every day it is open) and is also a truly inspiring hub for generating a sense of community and well being. This a real gem that should be saved in perpetuity.

Madrona Farm is symbolic of all that is positive about food and farming. This farm has been producing good, healthy food for the people of Victoria and vicinity, using sustainable practices, for at least three generations. Let's keep it as the jewel it is for generations to come. if we don't support places like Madrona, and help this farm to survive in a globalized, industrialized, multi-national world, we will all be the poorer, and so will our grandchildren.

Madrona Farm is important to the many people who count on its produce for their nutrition and health. The farmers simply produce absolutely delicious food. The important food factor aside, the farm is also important to many wildlife species. A walk on the farm is accompanied by the loveliest bird song as many species flourish on this carefully conserved bio diverse land. Time is running short on the January goal and an infusion of funds at this time would be a great boost to the challenged campaigners.

Madrona Farm is the best, healthy source of fresh, tasty, gorgeous food within biking/walking distance of the city of Victoria. It is now producing food all year 'round. If you never liked Brussel Sprouts, you must try Madrona Farm's. They are sweet , plump and amazingly sweet. David and Natalie have made a huge difference to Victoria's food scene. We NEED TO SAVE THIS LAND FOR ORGANIC FARMING.

This is the age of thinking and buying locally. It seems terribly short sighted to wipe out such a large local supplier of wonderful produce only to increase dependency on petroleum based transportation (truck, ships etc). for the delivery of food to the island. Once it is gone, it is lost forever. Think BIG PICTURE, think LONG TERM.

Do some research on "genetically modified" foods, how outbreaks of ecoli are directly connected, the reduction in nutrition, the high %age of GM produce in grocery stores.........all in the name of big $$'s - you will begin to appreciate how fortunate we are to have Madrona Farm, David and Natalie, and the best organically grown food on the east coast!! Would you believe that a substantial amount reaches the Yukon via friends and family? Don't let this all slip away - we'll not get it back. So VOTE EVERY DAY FOR MADRONA FARM!

Madrona Farm is one of a kind, and is a model of agricultural sustainability. What a gift to Victorians to have such an amazing selection of organically produced produce year-round. We visit Madrona Farm weekly to get the best produce available at reasonable prices. It's an important part of our 3 mile diet. What we buy at Madrona fills us up with nutritious food and it feels really good to support this fantastic enterprise. Madrona Fams should be protected so that what it offers to the local community will be there forever. Please Aviva, select Madrona Farm for the $250,000 community building grant. Thanks.

Supporting Madrona is an idea that will grow and grow through many generations. It will give children a chance to see and participate in how the food they eat comes to their family dinner table. It will provide an education sadly lacking for so many kids who live in apartments and condos with no garden space. Saving Madrona Farm will allow children, and then their children and grandchildren, opportunities to be part of a healthier, happier community. Sharing the harvest, after planting and tending an abundant crop, will ensure more than just food for the table. It will reconnect community members, young and old, with the land that sustains us all.

Protecting Madrona Farm in perpetuity with the Land Conservancy of British Columbia, is a model. It separates the business of farming with land ownership thus solving many of the obstacles to achieving food security on the island. Loss of farmland due to urban and industrial development, price of farmland, loss of biological diversity, a halt in generational land transfer, and a loss of farming teachers and role models, etc. Many think the ALR will protect it, but it only restricts certain uses and does not protect the soils, biological diversity or wildlife so essential to sustainable organic farming. The obstacles to food security here on Vancouver Island are a gestalt and reflect the global problems, as well as the local. Therefore, this modell for sustainable organic agriculture can be applied both on a local level and global levels. However, we must have a success with this model, before using it as a template to be applied to other situations. We must not re-create the wh

Madronna Farm is a unique agricultural site that must be protected for generations to come. Long before I first visited Madronna Farms, I had many times visited the top of Mount Douglas and looked down upon it's beauty. Visiting the farm property is like taking a step back in time. Madrona Farm is a brilliant model for protecting farmland and the practice of local, organic, sustainable agriculture. By providing a site for organic farmers to learn and practice food production, it solves the barrier of land ownership that prevents so many people from engaging in small scale, local agriculture. The partnership between the Chambers and the The Land Conservancy is inspired. Let's support this initiative, and create a model that can be copied throughout Canada.

If successful in saving it in perpetuity, it will also become a place where people can "apprentice" and learn to farm and heaven knows there aren't many opportunities like this around. We need this farm, all the produce it provides, the key environmental benefits that flow from protecting this land, and we need trained young people who can take over and continue to provide a reliable food source to those in our community who are unable to grow their own food, for many years to come.

The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the 'silent majority,' is often too busy doing what really matters to have time to speak up for what really matters. Madrona really matters. Thank you everyone, David and Natalie, for taking a stand.

As a farmer I am concerned about efforts to "save" small bits of farmland in a sea of much larger issues - we do have the ALR, and the public can do more to save farmland by putting more effort into keeping the land commission on track, the government honest, and help keep local farming viable by supporting all local farms. The family that owns the land should be working with the young people farming it on a succession plan, instead of trying to have their cake and eat it too. After all, they are related.

Madrona Farm
Let it stand that one of the three owners has donated $600,000 another $150,000, but as with most families, philanthropy doesn't always get distributed as evenly as title. This has been the pattern through history and that is why of the 25 farms Ruth and Lawrence Chambers looked at before purchasing Madrona Farm in 1951, it was the last one which remained undeveloped! It is time to put farmland in trust and leave it as a biological legacy for future generations. So the children of the future can taste the reality of farming in the middle of their cities instead of seeing pictures of farmers and crops where condos now stand. The post world war 2 world was the infinite world. Today it is the finite and thanks to Google earth we know exactly whats left! Lets leave something for those who will walk the earth long after we have passed through.

The key to Aviva's interest in this project will be that specifics of the planned land trust will be a first in BC. It is going to set an example for agricultural land stewardship excellence. That the site is already being used to train future farmers is just the first step!

How wonderful it is to have a beautiful farm here to provide us with locally grown healthy food, create community, and teach our children their connection to the land. Let's create field trips to madrona farm with our local schools and teach our children where their food comes from and how important is to eat locally and healthy.

I can't let myself think what it might be like without Madrona Farm. It is so important for this Island community to keep a source of food right here in the largest population base. Local food production saves using fuel for transportation, which means less carbon gases in the air we breath, and saves money to boot.

We, in Victoria, are desperately short of farmland. It is doubtful that we can feed ourselves, as we will eventually need to do, as climate change alters our paradigm of life support systems.. Madrona Farm is very important, both to help balance our land/food deficite and to teach people how to grow food on any land they may control in this respect. It has the advantage of being close to where a lot of people live, who have no land of their own.

You're right the Aviva fund is a great idea, but if it is here next year does not help Madrona Farm. The farm will be subdivided and a non-farmer will purchase this farm and the agricultural and ecological value will be lost. In order to build in the sand, silty soils (the reason why carrots can grow all year) the cliff side will have to be removed, filled in and whether you are in the ALR or in the most fertile valley you can't grow food in fill! Would you want to? WE have a chance here to adopt a model for sustainable agriculture and food security that can be used on a local and global level, for current and future generations-We must make this model succeed or rely on government to protect our food security, there will be no farmland left. This is RedAlert!!

The Agreement for sale with TLC closes on January 30th, all funds need to be secured by January 14 2010. The Aviva Fund would be a great help to the fund raising efforts. Yesterday a $15,000 donation was received, bringing the total funds left to be raised to $818,000 by January 14.

Big donations would sure help, but so would thousands of small donations. Let's keep in mind that anything we can do to help, no matter how small, might make a difference. For example, imagine if ten of us arranged fundraisers in the region, and each of us raised a couple thousand dollars. While that may only be a small portion of what's needed, we would also be drawing more media attention to the cause and then perhaps bigger donations. A big thank you to whoever it was that donated $15,000. Thank you.

Saving Madrona Farm goes far beyond wanting to save a family enterprise and have access to the excellent local produce it provides. This land will become part of The Land Conservancy and be a learning resource for generations to come, free from the threat of development, and part of a common heritage.

Just voted for you and sent out an email for others to do the same as I believe ecological projects are so very, very important to support at this time in history. We also have an environmental idea on the site and it just struck me that we should all be voitng for each other. Although my idea won't make it to the semi finals I would still like people to go and see it (vote too - but 6 hours is not enough time to save us), maybe we can all work together to push thorough some more environmental ideas or even just get 2 of them into the 'buzz' category. Our idea is : http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf4122 - Bright Future Project - Good luck and thanks - I'll try to get you all our people in the next few hours!

Of course we need to save MADRONA FARM. To have such a great farm within the city is a treasure. Not only is it a provider of great, healthy food, it requires almost no transportation to get the food to the consumer. Ronald Wright in his book, A SHORT HISTORY OF PROGRESS, points out that ALL past civilizations fell due to their FAILURE TO PROTECT THEIR FARMLAND, AND THUS ENSURE THEIR FUTURE FOOD SUPPLY. One of the biggest failures of our society, is that it takes a major crisis to get people moving and thinking. THINK HUNGER and then imagine NO MADRONA FARM.

I was born and raised in Victoria. Over the past 50 years I have seen so much green space and farm land been developed for profit. The blenkinsop valley is one of the last agriculural areas left in Victoria and is under presure by developers. Madronna farm is a jewel within this Valley that we have a chance to save.
