When someone you care about dies, or is going through a life threatening situation, it can be one of the most difficult experiences of life. Others mean well, but often do not know what to do or say, inadvertently leaving grieving people feeling abandoned short weeks or months after the death or the diagnosis.
How can we help people come to terms with their loss, and the new and unwelcome world into which their grief throws them?
Our idea is to produce and distribute at no cost to the recipients a “Grief Care Package” to help support people after bereavement or in a life threatening situation. NONE of the monies received would go to pay salaries or fund administration. ALL the proceeds would be invested in the development, production and distribution of the Grief Care Package to those who need it.
Dr Bill Webster is a grief counsellor and offers support programmes in many communities at no cost to the participants. His interest in the field comes out of his own personal struggle to cope with loss after the death of his wife in 1983.
The “Bereavement Care Package” would be sent, either through appropriate community agencies, or offered on a new supporting website, to individuals or families of the deceased.
Who could benefit? The Grief Care Package has an application in every situation where there is a death or significant loss. One example would be the families of Canadian soldiers killed or injured in the line of duty, who after the formalities of the “Highway of Heroes” often struggle to come to terms with their sad loss. Another example would be those whose loved ones die in a pandemic, such as the current H1N1 Swine Flu. Realistically, if a global pandemic really took hold, funerals and visitation would have to be postponed and social support would be delayed. This resource could bring some immediate support to people. Equally, agencies who work with people whose loved ones die by homicide, violence, suicide or by drunk driving could use the package. It would also have value in situations where the person’s loss is not validated because the relationship is not be legally defined or socially condoned, and who feel they do not “fit” in traditional grief support initiatives.
A different “Life Care Package” would benefit people or families going through a life threatening situation, to provide some information, ongoing comfort and helpful suggestions. Cash strapped hospices, hospitals and nursing homes could utilize this resource which would be offered at no cost.
Each “Care Package” would contain a DVD and several books and resources specially produced for the situation. There will be resources appropriate to adults and also to children. These would also be supported by a new website specifically geared to supporting people on an ongoing basis by providing ongoing web casts, forums and interactive programmes. The web site would provide a “Virtual Grief Counsellor” where people would not only to learn about grief, but to be able to network with others in similar situations. Less than 50% of our grant would be spent in producing the resources, and the balance in distributing it to those who need it.
We would hope that the positive benefits of this initiative would encourage the businesses community and concerned individuals to catch the vision of the ongoing importance of the programme, and that related agencies such as insurance companies, funeral homes, government agencies, hospitals, hospice would offer continued funding to make these resources available to people as an ongoing resource.

Excellent grant application. May you receive the maximum votes this deserves. Everyone needs a grief care package when going through the loss of a loved one especially for those who need extra assistance, support, and knowing there are people who very much care for them whether it be a loss of a loved one through war conflicts, people in extreme financial need, and to know where to find these resources.

What a fabulous idea. This is certainly one area that we all have in common. Unfortunately we don't always know how to best handle the loss of our loved ones or those close to us. In a world that is filled with uncertainty, resources such as the Grief Care Package can help in offering peace in the midst of a difficult journey .

This idea deserves great recognition. Dr. Bill nails this journey like no one I've spoken to or book I've read. Everyone who has suffered a loss should get the best help available and this is the it! It is a tough world out there and I know I would have been a "puddle" without this resource. You go Dr. Bill!!!

Our son committed suicide 2 years ago and we attended a six week grief counselling group which was offered by Dr. Bill Webster. Although the process of grieving is far reaching, Dr. Webster's sessions were helpful in aiding us to understand the dynamics of living with grief. I think this Grief Care Package is a long time coming and an absolute necessity. I do not hesitate to support this proposal, and may it move hastly.

This is such a great idea. I lost my husband 3 years ago and I have found Dr. Webster's program to be a real life saver. I don't know where I would be today if I had not taken advantage of his program. He is a caring and dedicated individual who works tirelessly to help people cope with their loss and re-establish themselves after the loss of a loved one.

Dr. Webster's service is absolutely invaluable to those who have suffered losses in their lives. My mother and I attended two years ago when my father passed away after a lengthy illness. His caring and gentle yet straightforward manner was just what we needed to help us reconcile our family's loss. To be able to extend this service further into the community would be of tremendous benefit to a great number of people. I wholeheartedly support this proposal.

I think this is a very worthwhile idea which would help many people who are in remote areas and cannot benefit from the support enjoyed by people in large metropolitan cities. The benefits are real and tangible and bring much needed understanding to the concept of grief support.

Aamazing. Some people cry out for help but many others do not want to burden anyone or show that they are in need of some support themselves. Tis is the group of people who want to reach out to and I think this proposal is a fantastic outreach program to these very people. Well done once again Dr Bill.

Without support groups and support material, I cannot imagine how I would have survived through the grief I experienced. Dr. Bill Webster's seminars were very supportive, and I am very grateful that they were available. Our community needs to develop a far greater awareness to the needs of grieving people, and every step taken further down that road is for the greater good. This project would benefit so many people ina very needed way.

This is a wonderful idea. After losing someone close to you most people do not know where to turn for help or are too upset to ask for help. Having information given to them in a package will give them a starting point in their personal healing process. It will help others to realize that they never have to be alone. This package will be a step toward reaching into the community to assist even more people. Great plan Dr. Bill.

This is a very worthwhile idea. With the losses I have had when I was a teanager and young adult (16,26 years old) there was not any support made available to myself. Only after a more recent loss, was some support made available. This package will be a great help to the community and greiving people and their families and friends.

Dr. Bill Webster has impacted so many lives....probably more than he can ever imagine. Without his support after the death of my spouse I am not sure that I would have "made it through" such a difficult time. The impact is far reaching as when I am getting better, my surrounding family members such as children, brothers, parents are also impacted by the loss and how I cope with it. So, Thank you so much -- your life work is very meangful and I can only ope that you are able to get more support so that MORE support can be spread around! It has been 6 years sicne I attended the group sessions and I have been very grateful to also access written support materials. MANY THANKS!!

This is a wonderful supportive resource. Five years ago, my father passed away and I was going through many mental health difficulties. I was very close to my father and Dr. Bill Webster's COPES series very much helped me to get through a very overwhelming period of my life. I had been going to other support groups but the COPES series made me feel very important and other people were going through similar difficulties. In a few years down the road, I will be going through another death of which will be my mother and I will definitely need this support package. I am very happy to have known Dr. Bill for 5 years now and to be with a very supportive grief group.

Hey Everyone. With one week to go, we have a HUGE mountain to climb here to get the votes we need. Can we keep up the effort. please? Vote TODAY and EVERY day and let as many people as you can know about this. However, may I say that whether we get to the finals or not, I have been SO encouraged by the kind comments and generous words of support. This outreach IS important, so one way or another we will continue to find ways to enable people work through the difficult challenges after a loss. Keep voting, but above all keep believing that ALL of us can make a difference. Thank you all for your support and encouragement.

There are not sufficient words to describe the tremendous benefits that would be reaped from a resource such as Dr.Bill's awesome proposal. Since the loss of my husband, I have had an extremely tough journey back to living. Although, at times, I have been fortunate to have had the comfort of friends, I did learn that a tragic loss, the grief you carry from it and its consequences are difficult for people to comprehend, unless they themselves walked this road. They would like to help but are at a loss of what to say or do. To quote Shakespeare, as told to me by Dr.Bill, "everyone can master a grief that is not his own". Without Dr. Bill's experience and knowledge in this field and his dedicated commitment to help and guide, I would not have been able to take the healing steps to come to terms and to cope. We live in a 'me' oriented society where people in need have few places to turn. Dr. Bill's proposal can only be considered an invaluable resource during a very difficult and co

When my husband died the undertaker gave to a friend, for me, a booket by Dr Webster which was so helpful in explaining the feelings which were washing over me. I bought his other books and have lent them to friendswhen they were widowed. I think having a"Grief Package" easily obtained from undertakers, bookshop, wreath-making florists, etc.would allow Dr. Webster to ease the grief of so many more people as we all, at some time in our life, experience the death of a spouse, friend or relative.. People are inclined to leave you alone to grieve,so the Grief Package would be helpful company

Dr, Bill Webster you are One Amazing Man!! Thank you for the e-mail notice of this. I am voting daily and have shared this on my facebook page in hopes of getting you more votes ASAP. I want to thank you for the encouragement you provided me when my Husband was Killed in 2005...I am still struggling with deep grief, confusion, depression and could certianly use a Grief Care Package. Our Canadian Justice System is so slow.... I attended a Grief Workshop session in Port Elgin this past spring and they shared a couple of Your Video's during the sessions. The people were very impressed with what you have to share!! I shared books you wrote, which I pruchased when I attended your workshops in 2005-2006. I have had experience over a few years of working with Dr Bill throughout the UK - and have heard him speaking to professionals, Funeral Directors and to those touched by bereavement or those who support the bereaved. It is fair to say that Bill is a unique resource. There are others out there doing the same work but Bill Webster provides a great insight into these issues and has the ability to deliver the message to rapt audiences. The audiences are usually spellbound and he gets "rave reviews" Funeral Directors in the UK recognise his value to their grieveing families. This sounds like a great initiative
