Maplewood Creek is a small salmon bearing stream in the centre of North Vancouver District. During the design of a water utility project for regional water supply an idea for a new kind of Community Park emerged.
Wouldn't it be cool if there was a place that;
We wanted a place that could not only do all this but a place that Canada would be proud of, a place the world would look at and be inspired. We are very close to doing this. We have a team of truly inspired individuals that are ready to help create our watershed learning legacy.
The major work has been done, the salmon have returned to spawn as soon as the new habitat was finished. All we have to do now is finish it off. We need the funding to make wheelchair ramps, bring services in (water, electricity), design and create the watershed education component, build shelters at each of the learning stations, install an underwater "salmon cam", create audio and brail versions of the learning component. We have a lot to do.
We can do this!
This is only our first small step. !

Salmon are so huge in our west coast culture. I love making appreciation and understanding of them so accessible.

I participate in the North Van School District "Salmonid in the Classroom" project each year. This is a truly great effort to continue to raise awareness of an inportant part of our ecosytem. Well done!

Water conservation is critical and since the public is very poorly informed about water issues this would be a most important way to get people involved in watershed actions and environmental protection. Great idea by Richard and we will support it by helping with academis education material Great initiativer HS

I like that the kids can get in there and splash around - "learning by doing" - the best ! Great alternative to having kids sit in a classroom all day..

I have fished Seymour river 50 years ago with my Dad and have lived on Seymour River for the last 10 years. Living within view of this site , I have watched it develop and I believe the proposed improvements to the Maplewood Creek Learning Centre would result in an outstanding educational asset for our community, Greater Vancouver and beyond. I look forward to bringing my grandson to this centre to teach him the river salmon story.
