We need a Van!!!!

DYHSS is a charitable not-for-profit organization committed to serving at-risk and homeless youth in Durham Region. As Durham Region’s only emergency shelter for youth, we offer emergency accommodation and access to a variety of programs to move youth forward one at a time. We believe that all youth should have a place to call home where they feel welcomed, accepted and valued; and where youth are equal as partners in creating a better community.” At Durham Youth House we address the needs of at risk and homeless youth in Durham Region by working with youth and other community partners to provide opportunities for youth that will support their success.”

Through the Aviva Community Fund the money for our idea would purchase a passenger van. This would benefit the youth in a number of ways ie. provide staff with the opportunity to assist youth view potential accommodation in their search for housing, help move their belongings into their own places in the community when they leave the shelter, participate in community events and outings. We would decorate our van so as to be known in the community. A new van would help set the wheels of life in motion for one youth at a time

  This shelter is an amazing shelter for the youth and they definitely deserve to get a van! As someone who has done their field placement at DYHSS I could see how a van would make life easier over there. It would help bring more clients to appointments and could even do outings with the clients. I could see how many smiles this van would bring to the faces of DYHSS and they definitely do deserve a van! Come on people, get the people you know, friends and family to vote and spread the word of this amazing place! HELP THE YOUTH! Good luck DYHSS!! Mike

  When the Arc closed down, there was no where for youth in Durham Region to go, other than adult hostels. Port Perry United Church and many other sponsors and volunteers banded together to fundraise and form Durham Youth (www.durhamyouth.ca) and build a facility to serve this need. They need your votes to get a van. Please take a moment to vote!

Each year thousands of bright, creative, promising Canadian teens quit school before graduating. At 2nd Act (registered as idea 1789) we recognize the crucial role self-esteem plays in a student's decision to drop-out.
