Hopeful Documentary’s goal is to raise $25 million for HIV/AIDS in Lesotho from students across Canada, inspiring a national initiative to end transmission in the small African Kingdom. With a documentary of youth traveling to Lesotho and working alongside local Basutho youth, we hope to capture not only what we are fighting, but what we are fighting for. Twelve young ambassadors from Guelph, Ontario (which raised $1 million as a community) will be educated, travel and then return to Canada to encourage five million youth to wear a Bracelet of Hope, handmade by women in South Africa. This grant would allow us to inspire the spirit of global citizenship, action and responsibility across Canada. While doing so, we will also leave one country, AIDS free!

The Bracelet of Hope Campaign is a Canadian initiative to raise $150 million for HIV/AIDS in Lesotho. Spearheaded by Dr. Anne-Marie Zadjlik in the City of Guelph, the goal is to put a $5 red and white beaded bracelet on the wrist of every Canadian. The bracelets are handmade in South Africa, providing employment for over a hundred women. In Lesotho, the money is used at Tsepong (Sesotho word meaning Place of Hope), an HIV/AIDS clinic where Canadian physicians work hard to fight the pandemic alongside local Basutho staff.

Lesotho is a small Kingdom surrounded by South Africa. In Lesotho alone, there are more than 100,000 orphans due to HIV/AIDS. The average life expectancy is approximately 40 years and the HIV prevalence rate is amongst the highest in the world.

Student Reach International is a Canadian non-profit youth engagement organization. When Guelph completed raising $1 million and the national campaign was launched, SRI committed to raising $25 million from students across the country. By putting a bracelet on the wrist of five million students, SRI believes young people can inspire all generations to make a positive and lasting change in Lesotho.

From three public secondary schools in Guelph, twelve students will embark upon an incredible experience that bridges academia and volunteerism. After spending six weeks in leadership development, the twelve students, all in grade ten or eleven, will commence an accredited university preparation course called Issues in Human Rights. From January of 2010 until the summer of 2011, the students will gain a deep understanding of HIV/AIDS in Lesotho, the history of the Basutho people and how wearing a bracelet makes an impact.

Upon their arrival in 2011, these twelve students will meet their counterparts in Hlotse, Lesotho, nearby the Tsepong Clinic. They will be partnered with twelve secondary school students from the Hlotse High School and spend sixteen days volunteering locally. Together and side-by-side, youth from two parts of the world will spend time on a farm, start a reforestation project and encourage local volunteerism.

Throughout their experience, a video documentary will be created and capture what we are fighting for. The statistics are known to the world, the images of poverty and sadness can be found easily. The Hopeful Documentary will focus on what we are fighting for - it will highlight the potential that Lesotho has to prosper. The twelve young ambassadors from Guelph, through means of this documentary, will ask five million Canadian students to stand up and support the global community.

Currently, schools across Canada are participating in the Bracelet of Hope Campaign through Student Reach International, including ten post-secondary institutions.
