Cultural Sensitivity around Suicide Prevention

Affichée le novembre 4, 2009

Since the tragic loss of her son Josh, in 1999, Jude Platzer, has worked tirelessly to bring the subject of suicide out of the shadows. During the last 8 years she’s visited high schools, colleges, PAC meetings, health care professionala and community centres where she’s presented her concise and powerful message to a receptive audience.

It’s a difficult and challenging message, but Jude, a Registered Nurse, has developed a methodology and compiled information in a way that gets through to her audiences. She uses a variety of mediums including a Power Point presentation, a dramatic video, a talk and carefully written handouts. Young people, parents and educators respond well to her presentation and she is invited back on a regular basis. In addition, new requests are always coming in.

There are two initiatives that, if implemented, Teen Suicide Awarness and Prevention (The Josh Platzer Society) realize would help enormously in spreading the Society’s message of prevention and awareness.

The first is to train more presenters so that we could expand our reach throughout the province. Right now, most of Jude’s work is centered in the Lower Mainland. She has traveled by invitation to Sechelt and Powell River but these trips are limited by funds and time constraints. The ideal solution would be to train presenters from different regions. Toward that end, we’d like to develop a Presentation Kit and a training program so that others could then carry this important work throughout the province.

The second area we’ve identified is the issue of cultural sensitivity. The Society has become aware that many cultural and ethnic groups in BC have few resources to address suicide prevention and awareness. We would like to hire a consultant from two ethnic communities to help us adapt and translate the Presentation Kit so that it would have maximum efficacy within these groups.

Why do we believe this is such an important idea? Here are the shocking facts about suicide and young people:

  • Second leading cause of death between ages 15-24 years
  • For every suicide death there are an estimated 30-50 attempts
  • 1/3 of teens who have died by suicide have made one or more previous attempts
  • Due to stigma of suicide, statistics are likely to be underestimated
  • Four times as many males die by suicide then females
  • For every suicide death 7 people are directly impacted
  • 4000 suicide deaths(all ages) annually in Canada directly impacting the lives of 28,000 people

Despite these horrifying facts, many teen suicide deaths are preventable. By providing youth and the people around them with the skills necessary to recognize the signs and symptons demonstrated by people at risk and understand how to respond, lives will be saved.

The only thing stopping us from getting our message across to young British Columbians is a lack of funds to develop our materials. The money from Aviva would be used to this end.
