Thank you to everyone in our region that supported the Kootenay Child Health & Development Centre project and who kept voting and adding comments every day. We didn't make it to the winner's circle but our project is definitely a WINNER for every child & family in our region and for our communities.

There are many many ways that individuals, groups & businesses can support this project. Renovations to the project building have started and we need to raise the funds to bring the project to completion. We need donations of cash, building materials, supplies & time, see www.EKkids.ca.

Currently in the Kootenay Region, families have to travel out of our region to acquire health care for their children, and in some situations families have chosen to move because of the amount of travel this requires. We hope by creating this Child Health and Development Centre of services that families will be able to access these medical services closer to home. Specialists who see children out of our region are not always familiar with the services that we have here and children miss out on important follow up and support when they get back home. Having a centre with a team of specialists housed together will offer more efficiency and collaboration between services and hopefully keep these professionals and attract others to our region.

Our Need

We need a regional center where parents and professionals can access health and development services for children; a center that coordinates a set of health and development services.

We know that services to families and children will improve if we can provide a more comprehensive service delivery system that is coordinated and offered from a single site.

Demographics

The East Kootenay region is located in the southeast corner of BC and encompasses just over 45,000 sq. kms. The 2006 population for this area is 74,237 persons. The projected increase in population by the year 2031 is 9%. (BC Stats 2006 Census Profiles, PEOPLE 31)

The number of children 0-9 years in the East Kootenay Health Area in 2007/8 is 7,555. The number of children aged birth to 4 years is 3,540. Children attending school, aged 5 years to 14 years total 8,665 children. (BC Stats 2006 Census Profiles)

The EK Supported Child Development Program supported 138 children with developmental disabilities to attend a licensed child care setting in 2007-2008.

The EK Infant Development Program supported 60 children (0 – 3 years of age) with developmental disabilities in 2007-2008.

There are 6 major population centres in the East Kootenay: Fernie, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Windermere (Invermere), Creston and Golden. The diversity and rural nature of these communities; separated by mountain ranges, lakes and nestled, each in its own valley, makes each East Kootenay community unique.

Travel to larger centres to access health and development services is difficult and expensive. Calgary is a 4 ½ hour drive from Cranbrook, Vancouver a 9 hour drive and Kelowna is a 6 ½ hour drive.

Our Mission

To open the Kootenay Child Health and Development Centre (KCHDC). This multi-service centre will be dedicated to improving and strengthening health and development services and programs for children and youth in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia. It will be a hub of co-located health and development services that will be in a central location and easily accessible.

These programs will provide a solid foundation for health and development service delivery in the region.

Objectives

  1. To build on existing partnerships between health and development service providers to strengthen and enhance their work.
  2. A building has been purchased and now capital funds are needed to do the necessary renovations to accommodate the partner services.
  3. Coordination is required to contract and manage the project phases.
  4. Increase service referrals and retain services in our region.

Programs and Services offered in the Centre will include:

- East Kootenay Child Care Resource and Referral Program
- East Kootenay Supported Child Development Program
- Kids Connection Preschool
- Pediatricians (2)
- Interior Health Children’s Assessment Network
- Early Intervention Therapies – Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy
- East Kootenay Infant Development Program
- Developmental Disabilities/Mental Health Program
- Children First Program
- Friends of Children

A large boardroom will also be available that will be designated as a community meeting room to host telehealth video conferencing and training opportunities in our region. A large assessment/observation room will be used by on-site professionals, community therapists and visiting teams of specialists from other regions.

Budget

If we are successful in this competition, the funds received will be used to renovate the existing building such as: applying for permits, Engineered plans, all trades, electrical, plumbing and heating, construction, painting, and finishing.

Winning this competition would help us recycle this building into a Centre that will help children and youth living in our region have a healthier life. The Centre will be a “one-stop shop” of child health and development services for children and their families.
