Cyclebetes is an idea built on a Promise to cure Juvenile Diabetes. Our mission is to transform people through a platform of community driven cycling events. Fitness and health, youth leadership, community building, and social responsibility are the cornerstones of Cyclebetes.
2009 was the inaugural year for Cyclebetes. Now we are coming back bigger and better in 2010. If we are one of the chosen winners, we will use funds awarded to us for expenses related to the logistics of our events. Our aim is to have Cyclebetes expenses covered by awards, grants and Corporate Sponsorship so that the money donated by participants can go directly to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Our Guiding Principles are as follows:
Cyclebetes aims to promote fitness and health through Cycling related events.
Cyclebetes programs will be based on themes of leadership, community and social responsibility.
Cyclebetes aims to develop youth leadership through the Cyclebetes Spin-a-thon Student Leadership Program and Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships.
Cyclebetes aims to build strong values in today’s youth by providing hands on education in Social Responsibility.
Cyclebetes will help fund a cure for Type I Diabetes.
The primary Cyclebetes events are High School Spin-a-thons and a Cross Canada Tandem Cycling Relay.
Spin-a-thons take place in High Schools in communities across Canada. They are indoor stationary cycling relays where participants spin continuously in teams for 12 - 24 consecutive hours. Schools invite businesses and members of the community to join in on the fun, register a team and spin to raise money for an amazing cause.
In 2010, Cyclebetes is presenting a new opportunity for Schools and Students with the Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship Program.
Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships will be offered through the Cyclebetes Endowment Fund which will allow continued, long term investment in Cyclebetes student leaders. Ten percent of all dollars raised through Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thons will support the endowment fund which will offer deserving youth scholarships for outstanding leadership, overcoming adversity and community contribution. Participating schools and students will be able to apply for funds to support their ongoing initiatives.
Also in 2010, the goal is to make our Cross Canada relay bigger and better to get more Canadians on their bikes training for community rides, and to join in on the world's biggest bike relay.
Our relay teams consist of elite cyclists, recreational riders, some living with Type I, all living well and fit.
In 2009 we saw students transformed into confident capable leaders, parents of children with Type I leading the charge to a cure on a tandem bike. We saw Canadians young and old, living with Type I, inspiring a nation, one community at a time.
In 2010, we will see more schools holding Spin-a-thons and thousands of Canadians joining in to support our Cross Canada relay.
We won't stop until we deliver on our promise and a cure for Juvenile Diabetes is found.

What a phenomenal thing to have been a part of...and what an incredible thing it will be to be a part of again in the years to come. Juvenile Diabetes affects over 200,000 Canadians - one of them our oldest son - and every time we hear about a new diagnosis we are saddened by the growth of our community. Yet, we know that with efforts like Cyclebetes an end is not only in sight, but we're charging right towards it. Next year my son, who will be 8, is joining me and will join a ride of over 600kms as part of the provincial relay team because he wants to help find a cure, because he can be a part of it. Some day, he won't have to.

"Cyclebetes" is the most amazing, success story of, first year fundraising, ever, in Canada! We rode in the biggest bike relay in the world, from Atlantic to Pacific in 3 weeks to raise $500,000 for children with diabetes! With additional high school spin-a-thons, we can more than double this in the 2010 Cyalebetes ride! With ALLdonations going to JDRF. The awareness of Cyclebetes success is spreading fast in hundreds of communities across Canada as the dream to find a cur presses on!

I did my first spin last year at Rockridge. Great cause, great people! This would be the most amazing event for the fund to get behind.

From Ottawa to Alliston, we are one step closer. Not only to home, but to the cure that will elude me no longer. I have dreamed for a cure since I was four years old, but I never could have dreamed that I would bike across this beautiful country with such remarkable people (Team Cyclebetes). I have grown used to living with diabetes, but the overwhelming support that comes with it, still gives me goosebumps. The journey that my mother, father, brother, grandpa and I have just completed will stick in my memory forever, but not only that, also all the people that cheered me on and gave me the extra push to get up this long, long hill. When I look back, I won't remember every twist, turn or hill. I will not remember kilometers biked or time riding. I will remember the money raised and all of you who got me to my goal. There may not be a cure yet, but its coming. When it does come, you will have contributed to it and I thank you in advance. My latest adventure is over, but I

That is us in the picture !!! Our 8 yr old son Liam has type 1 diabetes and we participated in the inaugural year of Cyclebetes by taking part in the cross country bike relay. We had a goal of raising 5,000$ and we double that goal !!! If my little boy who has to check his blood sugar by poking his fingers every few hours and constantly receive insulin to stay alive can pedal a bike across the Province of Quebec to raise money for a cure, I can do anything !!! Cyclebetes is the most life changing, most positive, most empowering event I have ever taken part of. Every dollar we raise is taking us a little closer to a cure (no more finger poking, no more carb counting, no more in jections, no more ketones, no more diabetes !!!). Keep Cyclebet-ing !!!
