Playground experience is an important part of physical and social development that all our children deserve an opportunity to enjoy.
Our goal is to provide a new playground and upgraded play surface that will ensure a safe and fully inclusive environment for all the children that attend South Slope Elementary and the BCSD (British Columbia School for the Deaf) as well as families within the community.
Our school provides services to both deaf and hearing students. We are also fortunate to have an on-site before-and-after school childcare facility, South Slope Out of School Care, operated by the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion and a preschool for deaf children, run by the Deaf Children’s Society. Within the school’s catchment area there are also 7 pre-schools/daycare centres including Fairhaven Children’s Centre, Burnaby South Childcare Centre, Bee House Montessori Daycare, Bright Star Montessori School, My First Blanket Daycare and South Burnaby Preschool. A new playground would serve the many children attending these centres.
Our existing play structure does not meet the needs of our diverse student community. The antiquated play set and wood chip play surface do not provide safe access for children with limited mobility or those in wheelchairs. It is outdated and replacement parts are not available. An updated play set supported by wheelchair accessible resilient surfaces is exactly what is needed to accommodate the needs of each and every child that attends the school.
South Slope and BCSD PAC and Playground Committee has thoroughly researched and selected pieces for our future playground that would specifically meet the needs of all the children of our school and neighboring community. We have been fundraising for this project since 2006 and have thoroughly researched to plan a playground that is inclusive and accessible. Our Playground Committee continues to fundraise to support the purchase of this playground. This could take approximately 4 years to complete without outside grants like AVIVA Insurance. We were able to purchase and install a "Swayfun Wheelchair Glider" with ramps, guardrails and curbs., an equipment piece recommended by the Fraser Health Authority's occupational therapist. This is Phase 1 of our plan and its cost was over $27 000. The total cost for purchase and installation of Phases 2, 3 and 4 is $27 839.98, $30 723.08 and $41 729.82 respectively. The total cost of purchasing this versatile and invaluable playground is estimated at $100,000. For insurance purposes, Burnaby School District # 41 will need to place the purchase order and will absorb the cost of installation for the entire project. This would ensure that the project would be completed within 2010.

The current playground really is not a safe one. With a lot of it boarded up & other parts with bolts sticking out, I no longer let my child play on it. It is so hard to explain why we can't fix the broken parts to a Kindergarten. Good luck to us all.

Please take the time to support these kids in their goal to get a new safe playground. These are great kids and some of them have special needs and they face so many challenges in life and they need a playground like this where they can go to play and feel like a kid again and get away from the everyday challenges. This school is not a large one. In fact only about 200 students. Some of which have special needs or are deaf. You have done really well with votes so far. It has been a battle for awhile. This really shows the community spirit. Our area is like a small town. Our playground is our centre , where kids can gather in the summer and after school to play. Parents can get to know one another, which is not easy these days. Cheers to more votes on the way!

You are right . Our school is small. But our plan is a good one that will benefit many children. It is amazing that we have had so much support. This shows how dear to people's hearts this cause is. It is a simple plan to bring joy to kid's lives. Kids who could normally not play at lunch will be able to. Kids can make new friends and have fun.

Creating this dream will create a community. There are so many negative consequences to not having a community to rely on. In a large city it is harder to get to know your neighbours and harder for children to have green space and places to play. Many children live in homes without yards and like to stay afterschool to play. But , it is hard when the current playground is so limited and keeps disappearing. In some ways it is harder to raise funds in a large city than a small town. Every parent you meet is selling the same chocolates or pies for any number of sports or school program. My son is in Grade 1 at South Slope, he attended pre-school at South Slope as well so has been at the school for 4 years so far. The school is very inclusive of diversity and it's so wonderful they have taken that into consideration when planning for a new playground. Kids need to have safe and fun equipment to play on during their breaks so they can focus in class. It will take years for us to fundraise necessary funding to complete this project and with Aviva it's amazing to think this dream will become a reality sooner than later. Thank you for considering our project.

I can't find anything in the rules about only using Canadian addresses. I see you have to be a Canadian resident to be able to participate by submitting an idea but I can't find anything that states that the votes must originate from Canada. About the old school yard playground. It is definately beyond recycling. Unfortunately as is breaks, it cannot be fixed or repaired. There are no longer parts available for mending. No one would want even if it was safe. It just too outdated and in bad shape.

My son is in Kindergarten and he loves going to the Playground. It is something I can't deny him but his wheelchair is very difficult to push on the wood chips. He still has a smile on his face as he chases his friends. These will be the ones to push him as they all get older so please vote for Southslope. Grade 6/7 students are taking all the food donations downtown tomorrow to support The Beat Cares. The community was extremely generous in donating toys and food that will make many families happy this Christmas. Thanks, everyone! If you haven't been to the atrium lately, be sure to stop by. The Christmas trees are laden with new socks, gloves and hats that BCSD/South Slope is collecting for needy families in Burnaby schools. I think the Intermediate's tree has the most. we are definitely breaking ground .. We are a worthy community with a lot to offer... ok. our playground is pretty much broken. a few months...no,a year ago we had monkey bars and now we don't...and why did it break, well because mean teenagers melted it. we have a so called sway fun and it was new a few weeks later it was gone and again those teens burned it. our sway fun is back now, but on the sway fun has a little table is in the middle of it and a build-in puzzle.....it is melted together!!!!!! those teens are icky! oh my mistake...not just icky they are super icky!!!!!!!!! thank you for reading.

keep up the great voting everybody...only a week left, then it's all up to the judges. Our kids deserve a safe playground. We all work so hard funraising but with only enough raised to put in 1 piece in 3 years is really tough on the kids & us as parents trying to help raise the funds.

Give Me Five...more votes and more days of voting. The Grade 6/7 classes road skytrain to Vancouver today to bring toys and food to donate to the Beat Cares. Of course, the generosity of our community resulted in me having to load my entire SUV and drive the donations down! The students mad their debut on the stage for a photo shoot. And yes, they were holding one of our Aviva Community Fund GIVE ME FIVE banners. Our community is a model of social responsibility...equality, respect, empathy, responsibility and integrity. Be proud!

My little cousin goes to South Slope. She tells me how she's watches the intermediates hang out on the hill during recess because the playground is for the primarys because the playground is too small for everybody. Only before and afterschool is when everybody can play on their playground. I'm voting so everybody can play together on a new playground.

I agree with the comment about letting the intermediates play with the primary. Hopefully if we get this , they can join together. It is not fair that intermediates don't get to use the playground now. It would be so so so super if the playground was big enough for everyone.

I also agree my son wanted to play with his "little buddy " last year , and could not. We need this so that all the kids can have a chance to play if they so choose. It will be good for all their skills and help them burn off energy for better studying.

In this day and age where kids spend so much time in front of computers, tvs and video games, we need to encourage all of them to be outside, getting exercise and staying healthy. This playground will be a great incentive to a large number of students and it is INCLUSIVE. Way to go!

Our playground is slowly falling apart and may not survive another winter. The wood is cracking and chipping and the bolts are rusty. The cold may crack the last of the plastic slide. Hello & here is vote but please read this carefully. I send this to all in the Top 15 this weekend. I am a supporter of Gabriola BC Clinic since Day 1 but I am NOT asking for your support. I have a different suggestion that I hope will appeal to EVERYONE voting daily: SEND A VOTE also at Yannick (2610). He is wallowing with under 5000 votes but only need US$10,000. We have a saying where I work in Africa: "When elephants compete it is the grass that suffers." Yannick's project deserves to have 25,000 votes more than any of us frankly ... he is disadvantaged and just needs transportation; many do not access the web site as it is mainly in French. I dare you to go read the "idea" and not be moved by it. Let's keep voting for ourselves as always, but also let's try to put Yannick on Top to point out that, ultimately, this whole contest is about the individual - every one of us. Having a safe and functional apparatus to play is so important for youth. Having sat on the computer for hours at a time casting votes has made me want to walk miles and miles. I did my best and hope my efforts will help the children get closer to having a playground. Keep up the voting!!!!!!!!!

We have to drive for 1/2 hour to get to a playground that my son can play on independently. It is worth the trip to see him play with other kids. The playground is more than just fun equipment, it is the children's meeting place and social centre. This playground will have benefits to a far-reaching community. This school has a lot of kids with physical special needs and this playground will be a place for them to interact in their community independently.

Thanks to everyone and here is a vote from me on Gabriola Island (acf 3958). But I am really here to urge you to join the "Top 15" Challenge to BOOST YANNICK who is still way near the bottom. Thanks to those who have already responded (even if you can not read French). He is a boy of 9 years age with Down's Syndrome & only needs $10,000 for some transport but is way below the 25 cutoff so will miss out if he doesn't get a BOOST. I'm giving you this vote this morning on Yannick's behalf and hope you support him. I'm not from Yannick's home area but he needs your help and threatens nobody. He only needs about $10K for transport; with Down's Syndrome in a small community at the age of nine life is not easy. I know life is hard on many people and children, but a communal show of support is what we have challenged everyone in the Top 15 to do as he is one of the few "individuals" on the whole board. Let's show him that all of Canada cares. BTW I am NOT from Yannicks camp but from another of the Top 15. Let's put a second vote from everyone over at Yannick's site. Thanks. Yannick is at 2610. • The wonderful comments and support from all across the country are simply amazing. Who would have thunk??? The networking and sharing and encouragement among communities has been beyond words and truly inspiring! Sure, there is the element of reaching out and trying to secure votes so that the special project that is near and dear to each of us makes it into the top 25 - the money will certainly go a long way to ensuring the project becomes a reality. But it goes much beyond that - way, way beyond actually. I suspect the individuals that get involved with these endeavors have a sense of community, commitment and caring for their fellow human beings. There are a number of worthy projects and good people and supporters connected to each. There has been a real sense of camaraderie, a bonding that has occurred, a spirit of giving and being able to help; to be able to make a difference. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, it is what Christmas is really about.

Did anyone watch the CBC news last night? There was a national study that found 5 times more children break their arms landing on a woodchip playground (compared to other surfaces). Well apart from the horrid slivers we are endangering our children on our sad old playground. I sure hope Aviva comes through for us! I heard that report on CBC Radio today. That report compared woodchip injuries to granite sand, there being less injuries on the sand because a hand or foot could slide when it hit the ground. They don't slide on woodchips. They said they didn't know about rubber or other surfaces. This report came from Toronto Hospital for Sick Children.

I teach in Mayerthorpe, AB and I fully understand the need for safe and appropriate playground equipment for our children. I applaud your community support, well done! You have my last day's votes (which are many, because my family is huge) and good luck in the finals. My students have also worked very hard to reach the top 25 and your school must be pumped as ours is too! Make sure you check out some of the other ideas such as Joe's Place (10000-50000 category) or heck even oursand throw your support back. I was reading through some of your preious comments and I wanted to let you know that a couple of the "rude/inappropriate" comments were put on many sites slamming ideas that were posted, not just yours, the individuals were quite opinionated and hurtful. Personally, I think it is quite sad that they spent their time trashing the hard work and determination of others instead of clicking their mouse to put a vote towards some excellent community projects. I am going to miss this in many ways. If anything, the Aviva Community Fund has made ours a stronger community. I will miss the late night blackberry bantering with many of the parents as we voted into the wee hours! I will also miss reading the comments, not just those from our community but the ones from across Canada and from competing ideas! I knew many years ago when my babies started Kindergarten with Ms. Lawder at South Slope that this school was a special place. Community? Two years ago, we did a similar project where I live. We also got funding from Success by 6 (provincial program), the Rick Hansen Foundation, the Lionesses, and a local child focused charity. We were able to raise $178000 within two years which then enabled us to also do surrounding landscaping. The School District also donated the installation time and work on the foundation and landscaping. It's all possible! Good luck!

Hi Denyse, Glad to hear there are similar projects out there. Unfortunately for us, there are no more provincial programs that will help us with funds. Cutbacks. Our PAC looked into charities , etc, but with the recession, we have been forced to come up with the money ourselves. Rick Hansen did help out with the Sway Fun piece, but we also added alot to get it. Thanks for voting for us. You must know how valueable our project is to the kids! Happy Holidays!

This project will bring alot of smiles to alot of kids. The current kids put up with alot of slivers, falls, and pieces being boarded up and/ or taken away in the last few years. Also, it is not suitable for the older kids, and so they are forced to occupy themselves at break times. If we get this , every child will be able to play, and all of the surrounding daycare centres and preschools and neighbourhood kids will too! What a gift !!!! It would NEVER be forgotten that you made this possible Aviva Canada!

It's tight at the top South Slope. Just under 2 hours of voting left. I sitting here sipping a medicinal, trying to stay calm. Whose heading to bed before 12AM EST? I thought not! Keep voting and supporting. It's heart warming to see the support we've been given today at Camp Triumph. Things are looking more promising than they did at this time last night, but as Yogi Berra said, "it ain't over til it's over", so we need to continue working hard, making sure everyone we know has voted today. I agree with triumph - please send support to our friends and dedicated supporters at Gabriola Island, acf3958, and The Thirsty Church, acf1612. Hopefully we can all hold our positions in the Top 25. Once again Thanks to all our supporters and Best of Luck. May we all be blessed with a spot in the TOP 25.

I have no idea how far down the skating club was but they have managed to fight hard and strong to the end. Voting is near impossible now as it takes me 3-4 minutes to cast one vote. The skating club have surpassed us and I see no way for us to recover the 100 votes they have on us now with just over 60 minutes to vote. I have enjoyed this competition and I thank everyone who have cast votes our way. Thank you to the parents of our school who have given up 2 weeks of their lives to vote, vote, vote. It has been a great race and now it is up to the judges. Thank you Aviva

This has been an amazing process. So many incredibly worthy causes. Even though we are in 2nd place, South Slope & BC School for the Deaf are the winners in my heart. I'm so proud of how our school and community pulled together and our 'little engine that could' kept us chugging right up to a fabulous finish in the top 25!
