Filthy rags; starving stomach; freezing fingers: all aspects of a man sitting on the side of a street. Down the streets of Kitchener-Waterloo, it isn’t one man; it’s hundreds. While many of us sit in front of our 40 inch TV’s, watching the latest movie accompanied with a large bowl of popcorn, the street-walkers simply desire a warm bed, a hot meal and a comforting atmosphere.

Whispers of discontent, of hate tend to follow those living on the streets. They are different. They should be concealed from the innocent. They are nothing but scum littering the streets, always wasting money. This is the mentality that many carry when they venture outside from their 2-door garage houses, never caring about the story behind the face.

It has always been them versus us; never we. They are buried deep within; whereas ‘us’ lives above the surface in bright sunlight. Taking Henry Miller’s advice: “The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself” (Miller), the barrier between the social classes can be shattered.

Strip the Streets: a mission to rid the streets of youth and create openings for reality to touch the privledged. First: a public demonstration, from Kitchener City Hall to Waterloo Town Square, consisting of regional schools united under one cause promoting awareness for the homeless. On a frigid, snow-filled February night, tents will rise in City Hall, as the activists will spend the night. Concurrently, donations of winter clothing, money and canned food will be collected for distribution. Second: a new dormitory for the local youth; a dormitory where they have the comfort of a meal everyday; a dormitory containing a sanitary bed; a dormitory where they can feel safe.

The streets: no longer exposing 13 year old children begging; no longer filled with the sniffles of curled up families; no longer a place where the heartless wonder.
