South Etobicoke has been hard hit by the economic recession and closure of local plants. Unemployment is at an all time high and JobStart is committed to helping community neighbours and friends at this time of crises!
Employment in South Etobicoke has not only been affected by the global recession, it has been compounded by an already unstable employment framework and the closure of major manufacturing plants in Spring of this year.
Here are some alarming statistics: * Spring, 2009 saw the closure of 4 local manufacturing facilities displacing over 1,600 workers * 30% of households are single family homes with children (Toronto Social Services) * 132,149 on Assistance: 83,960 are adults, of which 53% are female and 47% are male; 48,189 are children and 28% recent immigrants. 38% 16-28 years, 34% 30-44 years, 22% 45-59 years, 5% 60 and older (Toronto Social Services)
JobStart is a community not for profit agency that provides employment services to a diverse range of job seekers including adults, immigrants, persons with disabilities, students and youth, and to employers since 1980.
Each and every day we help local residents find and prepare for employment. In 2008-2009 we had over 66,000 visits to our Employment Resource Centre, a free "self serve" walk in centre. However, we have seen a consistent increase of clients since September 2008 and another significant increase since April, 2009.
JobStart is committed to helping as many job seekers as possible and as a result we are opening our doors to the Computer Learning Training Centre even wider. At JobStart we are very proud to deliver Microsoft Computer Fundamentals courses to assist the unemployed and underserved in our community gain basic technology skills that can help them become employable in today's business environment. We have had much success in training newcomers to Canada, women, youth at risk, experienced workers, persons with disabilities, new workers and displaced workers. We can help job seekers get an edge in an interview, post their resume on the net, e mail, create a power point presentation, or create their own webpage with new computer skills and confidence. The Computer Learning Training Centre is proud to offer training in Microsoft fundamentals computer courses in the Community, and we are proud to say that we have made a difference in the lives of 2,000 clients since September, 2006.
However, we need your help with funding to continue to make this become a reality! To sustain this intiiative through difficult economic and social times we need funds. Please help us help our friends and neighbours - JobStart - Where Futures Begin. Category: Promote well being Big ($50,000.00 - $250,000.00)
