Growing the Circle of Hope

In times when families are most in need, when a child is ill in the hospital and all seems hopeless, there is Meagan's Hug. From 2001 to 2005, there were 4,181 new cases of cancer diagnosed in children 0–14 years of age. Childhood cancer still remains the most common disease-related cause of death for this age group. We believe the facts speak for themselves. We believe our idea “will” make a difference and have a significant impact on this statistic. Any parent who has been through the loss of a child or experienced the journey with a sick child knows the emotional and physical drain the experience puts on the entire family. They also know the importance of social and emotional support in that journey. Eight years ago the journey for all the families at SickKids in Toronto changed forever. The hospital was given its first human hug. The hug was not only symbolic; it was transformational for all inside the hospital as well as for those outside the hospital. Those who needed hope the most witnessed the outpouring of support by thousands during their darkest hours. It was Mother’s Day in 2001 and it was the last one that Denise Bebenek would celebrate with her youngest daughter Meagan. Just five months earlier Meagan had been diagnosed with an inoperable cancerous brain tumour. In the months that Meagan lived with cancer she always kept a smile on her face despite her battle and numerous treatments. A few weeks after her fifth birthday, with family by her side; Meagan quietly slipped away. Driving away that final day from SickKids hospital with an empty car seat, Denise turned back towards the hospital and had a vision – a vision of a ‘Human Hug’ surrounding the hospital and embracing everyone inside. Knowing the healing power of the human hug, Denise was determined to make her vision a reality.

Our Idea: Meagan’s Hug…Hugs Across the Nation

Meagan’s Walk has raised almost $2 million in support of paediatric brain tumour research and has impacted thousands in Toronto alone. This has been accomplished through a “pledge-based” 5 km walk culminating with a hug of SickKids hospital. Families, friends, colleagues, individuals and teams come out after raising pledged donations. Meagan’s Walk has raised awareness for SickKids Hospital and the importance of the vital research conducted each day in finding new discoveries and cures into childhood cancer and illness and the importance of human touch in the healing process. It is our goal to ultimately ‘Hug’ hospitals all across Canada. The visual and emotional impact that the Hug makes is life altering for all who take part. It is unique; it impacts everyone who experiences it. It is innovative. It takes a simple, regularly used approach and puts a strong human connect to it. It is the combination of hope and cope. The physical hug helps families to cope with illness and the hope is found in the research that is supported through the money raised at the Hug. Terry Fox started with a vision and a dream raising one dollar at a time, and 30 years later is an international movement raising millions and millions. We believe Meagan’s Hug has the power to resonate with the world as Terry Fox did. We believe that Meagan’s Hug will be to childhood cancer what the Run for the Cure is to breast cancer. We believe that the Hug will become a worldwide movement and it starts here.

Our Plan:

Meagan’s Walk has created “Meagan’s Hug” as a unique way to bring awareness to the issue of childhood cancer and to raise money for paediatric cancer research.

Our Core Objectives:

Expand the “circle of hope” to 5 hospitals in 2010 with the ultimate goal of hugging hospitals everywhere there is a sick child. Take the successful Toronto model and create a turnkey program that is a “Hug in a Box”. Enlist communities to join the hug team and spread the word. Raise money through a pledged based event that will see a % of all revenues raised in the community stay in the community to support local hospital initiatives and a % will go towards leading paediatric cancer research through Meagan’s Walk. Raise additional funds through a national sponsorship program and community fundraising. Create a promotion and awareness campaign for the Hug. Provide training and technical support to new walk locations to build capacity within each community. Help Meagan’s Hug become a reality and let’s ensure that someday no child should have to die from cancer.
