Prince Rupert is known as the "City of Rainbows," the "Rain Capital of Canada" and the "Place Where the Sun Shines Least in North America." Dubious distinctions to be sure. Prince Rupert residents are renowned for not letting over 4 metres of rain a year bother them or slow them down. In fact, one of the most used assets in our community during all weather is our new 15-unit outdoor Green Gym in McClymont Park. Since opening day earlier this year, rain, fog, gale force winds, frost and soon to be braved--snow, have not stopped residents from working out and pursuing active lifestyles in this dynamic new fitness area.
As we look to enhance and protect our Green Gym to provide residents and visitors free fitness for years to come, we look to the Aviva Community Fund to help us install metal rain umbrellas over each of the four fitness clusters, to direct rain away from the equipment and those using it. Estimates from a local metal fabricator indicate that we could cover each fitness cluster for between $6,500 and $7,500.

Perfect idea. I've used the equipment and it's great to workout in the outdoors, but sometimes the buckets of rain (like yesterday) are a bit much to dodge.

That would look sick!!! It would definately show outiders what Rupert is really about as they drive into Prince Rupert, Rain!!!!! I hope they are bright enough to turn heads. It seems like a good theme for our town and will definately do something for community personalty. The rainiest place in Canada, and one of the rainiest places in the world. Apparently we have the least amount of sunshine in the whole world. Look for Rupert in this link... http://www.on.ec.gc.ca/weather/winners/winners-e.html

Haven't tried the green gymm mmyself yet, but it looks like it's keeping the residents active. Even in the rain, I've see timmes were it's been busy. Nice to see sommething for those who enjoy the outdoors. It's free and open year round. I hope our residents take advantage of the opportunity. Lots of different stations and somme are wheelchair accessible!

Last week in Portgual I passed by an outdoor gym very similar to the one which has been built in Prince Rupert. It was very busy with many users. The discussion that followed about our Prince Rupert gym consisted mostly of comments about some means of covering the equipment from our unpredictable weather in Prince Rupert. Very pleased this concept is being considered. Great work!!!

This is a great idea and with the support of all those using the outside gym, and the Rupertites, umbrellas will be the topping for fitness buffs.

I think that its a great idea to expand on the Umbrellas idea from the Waterfront. They are unique way to highlight some of the best of P.R. Lots of Rain makes big trees and big fish!!

The outdoor gym is such a great idea, especially if you want to do some upper body work at some point during a run. Doing push ups and crunches in the mud is a total buzz-kill. The umbrellas will help promote fitness and outside activities, both of which we all need especially in the wet winter months. Great idea Micheal!!

Duh, this is a no brainer, shelter will make the equipment 100% more useable.

Yes....it needs a shelter, umbrella, some kind of cover........especially during this time of the year.

Fantastic opportunity and support from a small community who needs all the help it can get from the local population. Excellent Job Micheal!! This project will be appreciated for years to come! I also believe that there is need for a shelter in order for the outside gym to be effective for public use. We do have several days of rainfall each and every year!

I think you should think about anchoring them to the ground or you might loose them in one of our famous wind storms. All the best in the competition.
