An innovative, youth-led social enterprise in the heart of downtown London, Ontario will give unemployed youth the skills training, mentorship and jobs they need to face the future with hope and confidence. The YOU Made It Cafe will be a vital resource for at-risk youth, a vibrant community hub and will lead the way in revitalizing a key historical block. Successfully entering the labour market has never been easy for young people. Previous experience is almost always a necessity and advanced education a requirement. For at-risk youth it is even more challenging. Little wonder so many drop out of the job market. Little wonder so many see their hopes and dreams for a better future fade.

Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) knows innovative solutions are necessary to provide meaningful opportunities for at-risk youth. In 1996, the agency created its first social enterprise as a means of providing hands-on training in a real work setting for unemployed youth. Since then, the agency has earned international recognition for this work and has expanded its social enterprise programs to include two manufacturing centres, a recycling service and sales programs both (wholesale and retail) in which youth sell the products and services created at YOU by youth trainees. This integrated model now serves more than 80 youth per year and provides at-risk youth with business experience they would not otherwise have. Take it from Sean, a young person who is now YOU's sales manager. "The Café will be a catalyst for positive change in the community.”

The YOU Made It Cafe will:

i) provide an additional 50 at-risk youth each year with business skills otherwise not available to them;

ii) provide youth with mentorship, new skills, experiences and opportunities within a caring environment;

iii) provide an opportunity for all Londoners to help youth build positive futures;

iv) be an integral part of a restored historically significant building;

v) create positive and lasting impact for youth by reinvesting revenue into Café.

You may find yourself asking some fundamental questions about this idea....

1. Can at-risk youth really operate a successful social enterpise? With the right supports and leadership - you bet they can! All of YOU's social enterprise programs are led by a subject matter expert whose main role is to teach youth key skills and provide them with opportunities to apply those skills. Under this model, YOU now i) provides YOU Made It Recycling to 200 local businesses ii) manufactures and sells YOU Made It gourmet level jams, preserves, gift baskets and wood furniture. This successful integrated model will be brought to the Café for the benefit of at-risk youth and the larger community.

2. How will the Cafe work?
The YOU Made It Cafe will operate at street level in an historical three-storey building owned by YOU. The building will house support services for at-risk youth including affordable housing, alternative education and employment preparation services. The building is being extensively restored; including a full restoration of the facade to its original appearance circa 1879. The Cafe will be operated by youth under the supervision of experienced staff who will ensure youth have training and hands-on experiences in all leadership operations of the Cafe. Sales from the Cafe will be re-invested into the Cafe and other social enterprises of YOU to ensure that the model is self-sufficient and provides ongoing opportunities for youth.

3. What is the Money Needed For?
Through donations and government grants, restorations will commence by December of 2009. The Aviva Community Fund will support the much-needed purchase of furnishings and equipment for the YOU Made It Cafe which will allow us to provide optimal training and optimal positive experiences for youth. The funds will go directly to benefit youth learning in and working at the YOU Made It Cafe.

4. Why does this idea deserve my support?
Because our young people deserve your support. In YOU's enterprise programs youth work hard to develop skills, often overcoming significant challenges to develop a plan and stay with it so they can build successful futures for themselves. When asked why she stuck with the program through many hardships, one participant said "Because I want a better future for my son". Their motivation to suceed is strong. The opportunities and mentorship the Cafe will provide will help re-kindle in youth the hope and drive they need to build a successful future. It is that important. It is that real.

Since 1982, Youth Opportunites has provided transition, career development and enterprise services to local youth. We provide a caring and active place where all youth are engaged in learning and creating opportunities to build their future. CLICK ON GROUP PHOTO TO EXPAND
