An innovative, youth-led social enterprise in the heart of downtown London, Ontario will give unemployed youth the skills training, mentorship and jobs they need to face the future with hope and confidence. The YOU Made It Cafe will be a vital resource for at-risk youth, a vibrant community hub and will lead the way in revitalizing a key historical block. Successfully entering the labour market has never been easy for young people. Previous experience is almost always a necessity and advanced education a requirement. For at-risk youth it is even more challenging. Little wonder so many drop out of the job market. Little wonder so many see their hopes and dreams for a better future fade.
Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) knows innovative solutions are necessary to provide meaningful opportunities for at-risk youth. In 1996, the agency created its first social enterprise as a means of providing hands-on training in a real work setting for unemployed youth. Since then, the agency has earned international recognition for this work and has expanded its social enterprise programs to include two manufacturing centres, a recycling service and sales programs both (wholesale and retail) in which youth sell the products and services created at YOU by youth trainees. This integrated model now serves more than 80 youth per year and provides at-risk youth with business experience they would not otherwise have. Take it from Sean, a young person who is now YOU's sales manager. "The Café will be a catalyst for positive change in the community.”
The YOU Made It Cafe will:
i) provide an additional 50 at-risk youth each year with business skills otherwise not available to them;
ii) provide youth with mentorship, new skills, experiences and opportunities within a caring environment;
iii) provide an opportunity for all Londoners to help youth build positive futures;
iv) be an integral part of a restored historically significant building;
v) create positive and lasting impact for youth by reinvesting revenue into Café.
You may find yourself asking some fundamental questions about this idea....
1. Can at-risk youth really operate a successful social enterpise? With the right supports and leadership - you bet they can! All of YOU's social enterprise programs are led by a subject matter expert whose main role is to teach youth key skills and provide them with opportunities to apply those skills. Under this model, YOU now i) provides YOU Made It Recycling to 200 local businesses ii) manufactures and sells YOU Made It gourmet level jams, preserves, gift baskets and wood furniture. This successful integrated model will be brought to the Café for the benefit of at-risk youth and the larger community.
2. How will the Cafe work?
The YOU Made It Cafe will operate at street level in an historical three-storey building owned by YOU. The building will house support services for at-risk youth including affordable housing, alternative education and employment preparation services. The building is being extensively restored; including a full restoration of the facade to its original appearance circa 1879. The Cafe will be operated by youth under the supervision of experienced staff who will ensure youth have training and hands-on experiences in all leadership operations of the Cafe. Sales from the Cafe will be re-invested into the Cafe and other social enterprises of YOU to ensure that the model is self-sufficient and provides ongoing opportunities for youth.
3. What is the Money Needed For?
Through donations and government grants, restorations will commence by December of 2009. The Aviva Community Fund will support the much-needed purchase of furnishings and equipment for the YOU Made It Cafe which will allow us to provide optimal training and optimal positive experiences for youth. The funds will go directly to benefit youth learning in and working at the YOU Made It Cafe.
4. Why does this idea deserve my support?
Because our young people deserve your support. In YOU's enterprise programs youth work hard to develop skills, often overcoming significant challenges to develop a plan and stay with it so they can build successful futures for themselves. When asked why she stuck with the program through many hardships, one participant said "Because I want a better future for my son". Their motivation to suceed is strong. The opportunities and mentorship the Cafe will provide will help re-kindle in youth the hope and drive they need to build a successful future. It is that important. It is that real.
Since 1982, Youth Opportunites has provided transition, career development and enterprise services to local youth. We provide a caring and active place where all youth are engaged in learning and creating opportunities to build their future. CLICK ON GROUP PHOTO TO EXPAND

This is a fabulous idea and Youth Opportunities Unlimited has been crucial in the community in helping youth gain employment skills as well as offering ongoing support to youth. I work in the Social Service Worker program at the college and the staff at YOU have been instrumental in providing our students with excellent education while on placements to prepare them to work with youth when they graduate. The proposed service will benefit the downtown area and the staff at YOU have both the leadership skills and the expertise to make it highly successful.

A program for youth that not only provides huge advances in skills and experience, but also enhances the London downtown area and builds community? How could this NOT win? What an amazing project, and led by an organisation with such an incredible track record of building successes for at-risk youth. Walk into Covent Garden Market any day and look for the You Made It stall and talk to the youth working there and see what a difference YOU's programs have made to their lives - you'll see why YOU and this project deserves to be supported.

i walked by the building yesterday - I see the HUGE potential that is there already - affordable housing for youth upstairs - the kitchen/cafe would just compliment the services - and it is so close to YOU's main offices too! These guys don't just give something for youth to do. They RADICALLY change youth's lives for the better! YOU goes beyond simply giving support; they develop meaningful mentor-like relationships with youth and stick by them until they succeed. They don't focus on any sort of advocacy either. They support all youth who need help, regardless of their background. You would need an entire seminar to give a complete idea of everything they offer youth.

The London community and YOU needs this project. The "O" in the YOU stands for Opportunity. We need this Cafe as it will bring just that, an opportunity for our Youth. YOU gives hope to youth and instills a caring environment that many of these youth are lacking. This Cafe will create a community for the youth and will bring the London community together. The community will be strengthened by this Cafe and will make a difference for our Youth, the leaders of tomorrow. Vote now for this very worthy cause.

The YOU Made It Cafe is a wonderful, wonderful idea for so many reasons - it will connect the youth with our community in a vital way, and add life and energy to our downtown area. Our city's youth will be the energy behind this, and they have more than enough drive and creativity to make it work!

This is such an exciting idea - there is so much potential both for London as a community and for the youth, who give our city energy and forward momentum, and in turn, hope for the future. This Cafe will instill a sense of pride in the youth who work in it, who visit it, who make it part of their daily lives. And the rest of our community will only reap the benefits - keep voting for this idea, it will have such a positive and far-reaching impact!

This is such a great idea! Youth Opportunities Unlimited has demonstrated the ability to run youth-employment programs very successfully. Voting for this idea makes sense, as the money will be well-spent and the rewards far-reaching. The youth of London will benefit greatly; as wil the community as a whole. With the many existing programs in place at YOU; there exists the necessary support to ensure that this idea takes off and is not only successful, but accountable! YOU can make this idea a reality!

The YOU Made It Café will help youth to gain skills and broaden their employability. Skills training programmes at YOU help many youth enter the workforce and conquer the conundrum of “you need experience to get a job; you need a job to get experience”. Youth at YOU are supported through an array of services so they can realise their full potential. In the worst recession in modern memory, youth have been hit especially hard. The YOU Made It Café will help many youth from all areas of London and the community as a whole. It will add value to the downtown community and contribute positively to the revitalization of the downtown. For over 26 years, Youth Opportunities Unlimited programmes have helped youth throughout London-Middlesex, and with the track record of instituting positive change, YOU will make this a giant SUCCESS with a lasting impact!!

Youth Opportunities Unlimited has been providing opportunities for youth for more than 25 years! The YOU Made It Cafe will be supported by an organization with a proven track record in helping youth. Not only will this project benefit our youth, but the businesses in the downtown London area as we can rejuvenate a busy corner in London into a vibrant cafe that will train youth and provide services to the downtown core area. This is a win-win situation for all in London! Let's make it happen!

A good idea in any city and a great idea for London. A youth operated cafe located in a significant building downtown within sight of Via Rail station and Greyhound Bus terminal. A place to take the time to assess needs and skills before heading on to somewhere else.

There are times and places where we can benefit from our skills and experience. A cafe managed by and training at risk youth is a great opportunity to demonstrate we all depend on others and success is a mutual outcome. YOU Made it Cafe is going to be something to be proud of.

YOU has the tools... they have the staff... they have the constituent need. YOU has to win this competition. This program is more than effective... it's downright POWERFUL.

Yesterday, I was talking about the cafe with a young person living in the building where the cafe will be - she got so excited about it - the training opportunities for youth, the convenience of good, local food right in her building, the nutritional programs that will be available to local youth - all of it was so exciting to her - a great reminder that we've got a great project under development! Thanks for all the great comments about it from everyone on this site too!!

When you vote for the YOU Made It Cafe you are doing much more than casting one vote. You are telling this community's youth in need that you care, that you want to help them build positive futures, that you believe in them, that this community pulls together to do the good work that must be done.

We've done well on lots of fronts on this - top project in this region, one of the top youth projects nationally, one ofthe most discussed projects. We've had support from many youth, YOU friends and local business leaders and even votes on comments from other Canadian cities. It's been a success on many levels already - now we just have to turn that support into the resources needed to get it done! Watch the YOU website for future updates on our progress - the YOU Made It Cafe will be coming to London!!
