Sault Youth Centre

The Sault Family YMCA is proposing to develop a Youth Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. Our community has not had a youth centre for many years and, as a Northern Ontario community, we do not have the youth-centred amenities that larger communities in Canada enjoy.

The Sault Youth Centre will be located in our main YMCA facility, which will significantly reduce the traditional costs associated with outfitting and operating a standalone operation.

We have met with representatives of a number of youth-serving organizations in our community and have enjoyed great support for our idea. Most importantly, we have surveyed hundreds of high-school students in our community to determine their interest in supporting and participating in a Youth Centre.

The Sault Youth Centre will offer young people the opportunity to participate in recreation, fitness, music and other programs. The governing and operating of the centre will be the resposnbility of youth from our community, with oversight and support from the Sault Family YMCA.

We estimate that $150,000 will be required to renovate and suitably equip the Sault Youth Centre. We are hoping to secure $75,000 in financial support from Aviva, which will allow us to establish the centre and purchase the necessary equipment. The Sault Youth Centre will feature a youth library, gaming lounge, computer-based music studio, mulitmedia centre, pool table and a variety of board games. In addition, youth will be able to enjoy the traditional amenities that are readily avaialble at our YMCA, such as swimming, basketball, exergaming and racquet sports.

The Sault Youth Centre will focus on providing healthy, safe and fun activities for thousands of high-school-aged young people in our community who would love to have a place to gather, to call "their own". Our facility is in the centre of our community and on all major bus routes, which makes us easily accessible.

We have done without a youth centre in our community for too many years. With the support of Aviva, and the commitment of our community partners, we can bring smiles and positive developmental opportunities to many deserving young people, for many years to come!

  haha, too many bars. no, no... that's not the problem. this centre wouldn't be geared at 19 year old adults but kids likely in grades 6-12--certainly not 19 year old university and college students. regardless, the sault desperately needs this and it is a great cause to support.

  We need this for the kids. A place to eat, keep warm, hang out, help with homework, councelling, make friends, socialize and keep out of trouble. Guidance for the kids. This way they aren't hanging out in the streets or finding older kids that influence them to lead them.

Such a centre can provide our youth with what has been lacking in our city... a place of their own with programs and resource people to meet their individual and collective needs.   The Sault needs a Youth Teen Centre and the Y is the perfect place to house one. As a youth, I often visited the Y and back in those days they had a jude box and a foos ball and ping pong table. It was a great place to hang out and meet friends. Having come from a troubled home, it was also a safe place and the staff were always welcoming and caring. We need a place like this for our youth.....

Working at the Youth Desk, teaching in the pool, lifeguarding, working summer sports and leadership camps, Christmas Ski Camps at Landslide....riding on the old Y Bus to Y conferences like North Bay & Burlington. I am especially fond of the Leader Corps exchange to St. John's Nfld. These experiences provided me with leadership skills, confidence, friendships and piles of giggles along the way.   I fully do believe that the Y.M.C.A in sault ste marie, ontario needs more activitiies for youths between the ages of 8 and 12. I have a child in basketball, two cadet cores and i still wish to have more for my child to do, but there is very little to do for such an age group in sault ste marie.
