W.I.N.G.S HOME FOR PREGNANT TEENS Waiting....Investing.....Nurturing....Growing....Soaring
Welcome to our home "PREGNANT TEEN"...Our doors are always open while you WAIT for the delivery of your beautiful NEW LIFE...We will INVEST in you and your unborn child... We will NURTURE your development as you grow into your new role as "Mother".... We will walk alongside you as you GROW and develop your independance and learn to SOAR on your own and help you to get established into your own nest.
With the rising number of young girls who are finding themselves Pregnant and searching outside of their families for support and guidance, these girls have very little choices of where to go or what to do with the new life that they are now responsible for and fall into a state of desperation and hopelessness, looking in all the wrong places for acceptance and love.
W.I.N.G.S opened their doors February 2009 to our 1st Pregnant teenager who had been living in a Youth shelter and on the streets. Our home has now become a safe home for teen girls in need of a loving & nurturing environment during their time of pregnancy and until their baby is 6 months old.
Our Mission is to shelter and educate homeless, pregnant and parenting young teens by providing comprehensive services that empower them to make successful life decisions for themselves and their babies. While they live with us they will participate in organized programs that will help them with Life as a New mother.
The need for this kind of home is great and Urgent in the Durham Region, because pregnancy and youth combined with homelessness are dangerous to both the mother and the child. Our home will provide to these young women, shelter, medical care, individual counseling, food, clothing, mandatory participation in education or job training, childbirth/parenting classes, practical life skills lessons and independent living skills training. With the help of the Aviva Fund we will be able to extend our home to accomodate up to 10 girls in 2010 and their babies. Starting in January 2010 we will be running a program called "Light up the World".
Light Up Your World is a transformational tool that shares some very significant messages that bring hope and vision to every heart. This program will help our girls realize the power and significance of their choices, it affirms them, and equips them to walk in their purpose and destiny. It's fun and interactive, yet powerful and practical. It will provide these young moms KEYS that not only enable, but activate and empower them to be positive world changers!
W.I.N.G.S. Home strives to break the negative cycle associated with teen pregnancy: Abortion, High risk births with premature and low birth-weight babies, Interrupted education, repeat teen pregnancy, Poverty, Dependence on public assistance and Child abuse and neglect in the next generation.
We liason with other charitable, non-profit community and government agencies and organizations to improve the quality of life of these young women.
With the help of Aviva we would like to Renovate our existing 3000sq ft+ of living space to accomodate more girls and offer more services to not only our girls but also the young teen moms in the community:
Renovation Project would begin immediately and would be completed within 8 months, would include:
Extension on back of home with a new foundation adding a 2nd storey above this area as well as the garage area, adding 2 new Nursery rooms, a new full bathroom, and a class room. On the main floor the addition would allow for an extension of the current small kitchen, a larger main floor bathroom, and a main floor laundry facility. Total cost would be $200,000.00 and would add an additional 1500 sq ft of living space approx.
Extending Kitchen to accomodate a Commercial Grade Kitchen - Used to teach the girls cooking and important domestics, not to mention an area large enough that we can sit together as a family for meals. $40,000.00
Additional furnishings for new bedrooms, bathrooms and class rooms, $10,000
I would like to share with you the facts and statistics for our area to help bring this to a reality for you the reader as well:
According to the most recent statistics from the Durham Region Health Department, the teen pregnancy rate in Durham Region is the highest in Ontario and within Durham Region, Oshawa being the largest number of teen pregnancies. The 2006 statistics showed 45 pregnant teens per 1,000 females in Oshawa, doubling Ajax, which sat in second place with 23. Only 22 of the 45 of the Oshawa babies were actually carried to term.
Help me bridge a gap in Durham Region for these young homeless pregnant teens to provide them with hope and a future for their unborn child and a safe and nurturing environment for both mom & baby.

I love this idea, and will continue to pray for its support. Having lived in both Oshawa and Ajax/Pickering for my teen years, I have seen firsthand how many young girls need the support during pregnancy. This is an amazing idea and great opportunity to help the community. God Bless!

FINALLY Marion you are getting this out there, I have told you for years that you would be "a voice for those who don't have a voice". I am so happy to see that you are finally walking in your destiny. I talk about you all the time to people I don't think I have ever met someone as kind and generous as you and who reminds me so much of what Jesus would truly be like. You have my 100% support and I would definately be there for you . How many times have you stood with me, given to me, listened to me..woh I want to cry thinking about it. Thank you God for this woman. Love you. Joanne

Being part of having your first pregnant teen in your home and to see how in a very few months, this precious (once lost child), carrying a child has become a "mom". You have nurtured her in every area of her life. You have become part of her family. The first few years of a child's life is so critical, and being in the environment that he is in for 6 months, he has an amazing start. Also, to see this girl mature into a woman blesses our hearts. I give you my full support in prayer as well in any way you need me. I am so blessed to see with my own eyes what someone can do for another. These pregnant teens will find HOPE in their HOPELESS situations. Because of organizations like yours, they will be able to keep their babies. And as these mothers get the support they need, they will learn how to "Pay it forward" for someone else that is walking their journey that they have overcome because of people like YOU! How exciting that what you have dreamed of for so long, is now here. You ar

If anyone has compassion, it is this woman. I have watched her as she prepared her home for these young teens. I felt her heart, saw her tears as she wept for these young women and their unborn child. She has made many sacrifices and puts other peop...le's needs ahead of herself. I love her dearly. God is opening the doors for her. I know I will be their helping her usher in these teen mothers. I was a teen mother and I know what these women will be facing. With this ministry they would have options, would be mentored and loved unconditionally. And remember, back then we did not have people like this faithful woman of God. God Bless her and her mission

Marion, I know of some young moms who were in need of this kind of service in Durham Region but had to leave the area to find it. That meant they were far from family and friends at a time when they most needed to be near them most. Good for you for having compassion and putting together a plan of action.

As part of the prayer movement of this nation, I know first hand that to effectively change the tide of abortion cases in our midst, we need to be actively be involved in the creation of alternatives for unwed mothers who don't want to give birth, because there is no support available to them. I hope to be able to support W.I.N.G.S in more than just a vote, for now though, I applaud Marion Cozens for her obedience to the Lord, and her willingness to be used in this way. There is no greater love than those who lay down their lives for their friends. The social justice movement needs to be in partnership with the prayer movement, and vice-versa. I am excited for the times we live in where we are in unity, praying in faith and love and doing the great acts of compassion in the same way, may it increase Lord. LIFE LIFE LIFE, we welcome life and we are willing to pay the price. We speak Life and Life in Abundance to all the babies who are to come, and their mothers who will be sp

Thank you Marion for starting up this much needed home setting for young pregnant teens. As the mother of your first teen that you took in back in February, I would like to say "Thank you", and may God continue to watch over you and your family, as you have watched over my daughter and now my grandson. Marion your support and guidance in addition to your caring and generosity towards Megan has been a blessing. You have a wonderful family, very caring friends, in addition to your supportive church community who have all readily accepted Meg and do not judge her for choosing this life changing role of being a young teen mom. Finally - Meg you have become a lovely mom and a terrific daughter once again. Love & Blessing!

Voting for this place for sure. When I was a pregnant teen in Oshawa there was NO PLACE to go I had to stay at an abused woman shelter which is not great for pregnant teens. I felt lost and lonely and had no support. What you are offering these girls I am so in favor of you are a true samaratan in this area and thank you on behalf of all the pregnant teens for showing that there is people who genuinly care about them and that they can carry their baby and not abort it, because there is help for them in loving family like yours

Words could never express how much you have done for people in this world. Canada is fortunate to have you in this country. One day you are going to be rewarded publically for everything you do. I know that there is much you do that noone even knows and Canada is lucky to have you. I like the focus on making resources available to pregnant teens, but I find the anti choice undertone to this groups description disturbing. Is there any way you can support these women without pushing any decision or agenda on them? That is an initiative I would like to see.
novembre 12, 2009 @ 4:39 EST
Jim
I see nothing in this group that would show any kind of anti choice undertones whoever you are Kmarx you're an idiot. This kind of home is when the girls have already made their choice, noone is twisting their arm they decide first then they come in to stay, stupid people make me mad. You are on the wrong place kmarx to vent your frustration. I was a baby that was almost aborted at the early stage of pregnancy but my mother changed her mind and I am so thankful she did because I am now alive to tell my story and have 3 beautiful children that are thankful as well. Don't post stupid things on here this is not the venue for it. This lady whom I have know for along time has put her life down for these girls and would do anything for them. She would also help girls who have had an abortion she does not judge.
novembre 12, 2009 @ 6:49 EST

There is no anti-choice in this message at all. Yes, many of us that support this cause are Christians. Yes, most, if not all of us are pro-life. This program is to promote the love and kindness that Jesus showed his followers in his days. We are meant to be like Jesus, and I believe that God is guiding this program and helping Marion and her helpers along the way. I agree fully and will stand by Marion thru it all. I also have known her since I was very young, and I have never seen Marion judge ANYONE. For someone to come on here and try to counter-act everything that she stands for, it makes me furious! Kmarx, you clearly have NEVER met Marion, so please research the person or program which you are trying to put down b/c clearly, you have NO idea. Thanks, Jim for your comment. I am 100% in a agreement with you. ;)

Now that you are almost through to the semi-finals, maybe your supporters could spare a thought for another community trying to help its youth ? We are registered on this site as idea 1551. Bear River, Nova Scotia has its fair share of drug and alcohol related issues and we are trying to add a playground to the village to give our children a safe, fun environment in which to play and interact. Our hope is to make the playground the focus of cross-generational and cross-cultural socialisation, bringing people together on all levels to help create a more dynamic, involved society within the village. Please spare a minute to add your vote to our round 3 voting next week. It will mean so much to our coming generation to get this playground in place. Many thanks.

Marion! Thank God for these results so far. Praying that the awareness of this issue would only expand and become so huge and the Lord would continue to put favor on you and the work of your hands. That the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of Jesus would hit all of us and we may see the opportunity to partner with Him, and let the Spirit of Elijah move our hearts as "parents int he Spirit" toward these children that are having children. Just to realize the awesome response of God to our prayers against abortion through initiatives like yours. That everything rises and falls on leadership, and the church has been given the privilege to be a leader by being a Voice that says not on our watch and leave a legacy to our children that says this is the decade where the church started to care about young people having kids. Love you Marion, Wendy.

I have been a single mom, for a long time now. I found myself pregnant 17 years ago, and If it had not been for support during my pregnancy (given by my parents) I would not have been able to make it on my own. I have a 16 year old who is serving the Lord with passion, because I was able to receive care and a helping hand when your world is changing so violently. Only God can give you the strength in the inner man, but we also need the help of people who care for the person you are carrying on the inside, and just care for you while your hormones are rising and going crazy. This project is very very needed.

In ten years we will look back and we will know that we all had the opportunity to be part of the solution to the problem of abortion in our society. We will be looked at in the eye of children who came into the world because someone cared. There will be women, who don't have to become living zombies, as post abortion victims. Life would have been created and we will be a more humane society for it, a society that not only takes in pets from the streets and creates costly shelters for stray cats and dogs, but we will be caring for the precious young women in our midst who need a second chance.

W.I.N.G.S.
W.I.N.G.S. believes in the sanctity of LIFE.. and we are a non-political ministry. The issue of Abortion does not define our shelter. With that being said ..I completely know that many pregnant young girls make very difficult decisions whether it is to carry the baby to term and keep the baby or to give baby up for adoption or to abort the baby... all these choices are extremely hard for a single young girl. Our home is for girls who need the support while they are pregnant and have decided to carry baby to term. I have had the opportunity to journey through with a young teen who did abort her baby and she had many mixed feelings/emotions afterwards, we are there for her when she needs to talk about her struggles with her decision and how she can move forward with her life. Blessings Marion

Thank you Marion for your honest answer. While I am a strong believer in Pro-Choice, I consider taking on the challenge of motherhood as one of those choices. No matter what a woman's decision is, they need a place of love and shelter when they find themselves with no other means of support. I continue to support your cause and wish you well. Most of all I wish the young women that you work with success in what ever they choose to do. And the strength to do it well.

not sure why stormangel you are bringing this up on this venue, this is not about pro choice or any other political agenda. Marion clearly stated that they believe in the sanctity of LIFE If you have issues Stormangel you should speak directly with Marion in person instead of trying to sabotage this idea as well. If you knew her you would know that she is not a judgemental person and accepts everyone and loves them through whatever the situation of pain or hurt they maybe going through.

k i can speak for this lady i was going to live with her a litle while ago and changed my mind and had an abortion when she found this out she called me and left 3 messages for me asking me if i was ok ,now this lady i only met one time and she kept trying to get me to make sure i was okay. i wasnt ok i was so sad and wished i didn't do it but she was so kind to me and help me to get through it she even buyed me a beautiful bathrobe as a gift i will never forget her kindness. She wanted me to keep the baby and told me t hat she would be with me the hole time but i was scared to be a mom. She never said one thing bad to me about my abortion she just said what is important right now is how your doing and she would be there if i needed her i know she goes to church and stuff and wants girls to keep their kids but she dosen't point fingers at you if you don't she is just there with open arms. you are so kind thanks P.

this idea definately should has merit to win this competition. People like this who have the courage to start something and are willing to put in their own money into before there is even a sign of any other kind of monies coming in that is a Love for what your doing. I applaud that . Good Luck!!! I think you should win.

I agree with everything Marion has said. We believe in LIFE. This home is for young women who have already made the choice to keep their baby to term - whether they intend to raise the baby, or give it up for adoption, is up to them. This has nothing to do with whether or not the young mother has had an abortion. This cause is for pregnant teens who have decided to keep their babies to term and need a place to stay. Marion is not a judgmental kind of person. She loves everyone she comes into contact with - those who have aborted babies, or not. That is what this cause is about - loving others. Jesus did it, and Marion is following His words. Matthew 22:37-40 (New International Version) 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[a] 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[b] 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

I have been voting every day. I am not trying to "sabotage" anything. I am sorry if you feel that way, but you don't know me at all and are being hypocritical and judgmental and this attack on me needs to stop. I am just trying to learn about the world around me. It was an innocent question. I am sorry that my nievity had me forget what a loaded question that would be. God does want us to love everyone and even though I am pro life, I myself have supported someone after an abortion. I also have had pregnant girls come through my house. There is much to know about me and until you do please stop assuming and judging me.

Hello & here is vote but please read this carefully. I send this to all in the Top 15 this weekend. I am a supporter of Gabriola BC Clinic since Day 1 but I am NOT asking for your support. I have a different suggestion that I hope will appeal to EVERYONE voting daily: SEND A VOTE also at Yannick (2610). He is wallowing with under 5000 votes but only need US$10,000. We have a saying where I work in Africa: "When elephants compete it is the grass that suffers." Yannick's project deserves to have 25,000 votes more than any of us frankly ... he is disadvantaged and just needs transportation; many do not access the web site as it is mainly in French. I dare you to go read the "idea" and not be moved by it. Let's keep voting for ourselves as always, but also let's try to put Yannick on Top to point out that, ultimately, this whole contest is about the individual - every one of us. Let's make this our communal cause in these last days. Thanks for your time. BOOST YANNICK DAILY! (2610)

What an amazing thing that you are doing, i was a teen mom,but i had a lot of support, and things have worked out amazing, and i believe that all that support made a difference,so for you to help people that don't have support, its amazing, and it gives teens options, positive ones, and can show them that as scary as this may be, people still care and will help,i will be praying for you God Bless!

I'm giving you this vote this morning on Yannick's behalf and hope you support him. I'm not from Yannick's home area but he needs your help and threatens nobody. He only needs about $10K for transport; with Down's Syndrome in a small community at the age of nine life is not easy. I know life is hard on many people and children, but a communal show of support is what we have challenged everyone in the Top 15 to do as he is one of the few "individuals" on the whole board. Let's show him that all of Canada cares. BTW I am NOT from Yannicks camp but from another of the Top 15. Let's put a second vote from everyone over at Yannick's site. Thanks. Yannick is at 2610. Here's an idea ... bookmark the following and after you vote for your own project, click on the bookmark every day and vote for Yannick too: http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf2610

Hi everyone...Thank you ALL so much for your constant support and daily voting for us with only 3 days left to go the competition is almost over and I wanted to take this time to say a BIG THANK YOU to first AVIVA for such an amazing opportunity to share W.I.N.G.S with Canada through this site and for the possibility of a chance to expand our location to help even more pregnant teens. Thank you to all my friends and family who have supported me and helped me with W.I.N.G.S. I couldn't have done it without you all... and Thank you to the Community for your support and belief in these girls. Their life has already been impacted by the support and love they see here, and last but not lease Thanks to all my fellow contestants for your support and you passions in your own adventures to do good and see changes in this Country... There is hope for a nation that invests in a culture of life instead of a culture of death. There is hope for a society to be touched by the hurting. There is hope in a people finding it more blessed to give than to receive. There is hope for many girls that otherwise find it too overwhelming to carry a life to term, and don't want to abort their babies either. Thanks be to God, for Aviva, and this process that has pushed us to fight, we thank you Marion! For being a leader and forerunner to many ministries that will be encouraged to be born as well, I believe your an inspiration to people who have had big dreams and they too will start to dream again. There is so much hope, a change of perspective!!!

I would love to get together and talk about this amazing thing you are doing for these girls. It is about time someone did something in durham region, seriously this is a huge problem in this region and it has been swept under the rug. Good job and I hope you win this one is probably one of maybe 3 in the whole thing that deserves to win. good luck

My votes are for all of you in the top 60.,realizing that not everyone will make the top 25. I am so amazed by all the comments in all of the categories and ideas. Every idea is deserving of support. This has brought so many communities together to support each other's ideas. Let's all vote for each other tomorrow. Thank you to Aviva for creating this opportunity. I know the lasting alliances and friendships between our communities can go on, long after the voting ends. Let us take time to reflect, not only on our effort for our own ideas, but for everyone who has supported our ideas, friends, family, neighbours, etc. Thank you.
