W.I.N.G.S HOME FOR PREGNANT TEENS Waiting....Investing.....Nurturing....Growing....Soaring

Welcome to our home "PREGNANT TEEN"...Our doors are always open while you WAIT for the delivery of your beautiful NEW LIFE...We will INVEST in you and your unborn child... We will NURTURE your development as you grow into your new role as "Mother".... We will walk alongside you as you GROW and develop your independance and learn to SOAR on your own and help you to get established into your own nest.

With the rising number of young girls who are finding themselves Pregnant and searching outside of their families for support and guidance, these girls have very little choices of where to go or what to do with the new life that they are now responsible for and fall into a state of desperation and hopelessness, looking in all the wrong places for acceptance and love.

W.I.N.G.S opened their doors February 2009 to our 1st Pregnant teenager who had been living in a Youth shelter and on the streets. Our home has now become a safe home for teen girls in need of a loving & nurturing environment during their time of pregnancy and until their baby is 6 months old.

Our Mission is to shelter and educate homeless, pregnant and parenting young teens by providing comprehensive services that empower them to make successful life decisions for themselves and their babies. While they live with us they will participate in organized programs that will help them with Life as a New mother.

The need for this kind of home is great and Urgent in the Durham Region, because pregnancy and youth combined with homelessness are dangerous to both the mother and the child. Our home will provide to these young women, shelter, medical care, individual counseling, food, clothing, mandatory participation in education or job training, childbirth/parenting classes, practical life skills lessons and independent living skills training. With the help of the Aviva Fund we will be able to extend our home to accomodate up to 10 girls in 2010 and their babies. Starting in January 2010 we will be running a program called "Light up the World".

Light Up Your World is a transformational tool that shares some very significant messages that bring hope and vision to every heart. This program will help our girls realize the power and significance of their choices, it affirms them, and equips them to walk in their purpose and destiny. It's fun and interactive, yet powerful and practical. It will provide these young moms KEYS that not only enable, but activate and empower them to be positive world changers!

W.I.N.G.S. Home strives to break the negative cycle associated with teen pregnancy: Abortion, High risk births with premature and low birth-weight babies, Interrupted education, repeat teen pregnancy, Poverty, Dependence on public assistance and Child abuse and neglect in the next generation.

We liason with other charitable, non-profit community and government agencies and organizations to improve the quality of life of these young women.

With the help of Aviva we would like to Renovate our existing 3000sq ft+ of living space to accomodate more girls and offer more services to not only our girls but also the young teen moms in the community:

Renovation Project would begin immediately and would be completed within 8 months, would include:

Extension on back of home with a new foundation adding a 2nd storey above this area as well as the garage area, adding 2 new Nursery rooms, a new full bathroom, and a class room. On the main floor the addition would allow for an extension of the current small kitchen, a larger main floor bathroom, and a main floor laundry facility. Total cost would be $200,000.00 and would add an additional 1500 sq ft of living space approx.

Extending Kitchen to accomodate a Commercial Grade Kitchen - Used to teach the girls cooking and important domestics, not to mention an area large enough that we can sit together as a family for meals. $40,000.00

Additional furnishings for new bedrooms, bathrooms and class rooms, $10,000

I would like to share with you the facts and statistics for our area to help bring this to a reality for you the reader as well:

According to the most recent statistics from the Durham Region Health Department, the teen pregnancy rate in Durham Region is the highest in Ontario and within Durham Region, Oshawa being the largest number of teen pregnancies. The 2006 statistics showed 45 pregnant teens per 1,000 females in Oshawa, doubling Ajax, which sat in second place with 23. Only 22 of the 45 of the Oshawa babies were actually carried to term.

Help me bridge a gap in Durham Region for these young homeless pregnant teens to provide them with hope and a future for their unborn child and a safe and nurturing environment for both mom & baby.
