Great Canadian Theatre Company and the Ottawa Theatre Network combine forces to boost the current renaissance of Ottawa’s lively professional theatre scene. A recent symposium with members of both Ottawa’s established and emerging theatres established that one of the greatest obstacles to growth of the Ottawa theatre scene is a lack of professional development opportunities in all aspects of theatre. The Ottawa Theatre Network and the Great Canadian Theatre Company are combining forces to fill that need. Through a series of workshops, training programs, and laying the groundwork for a strong resource sharing Network, Ottawa's Next Stage project will fuel the current renaissance of Ottawa’s lively professional theatre scene. A vote for Ottawa’s Next Stage project will further our dream of nurturing new artists and new works in our nation’s capital.
Who are we? GCTC is Ottawa’s leading independent theatre company. We are a non-profit charitable company that has successfully produced professional contemporary English-language theatre in Ottawa since 1975. The Ottawa Theatre Network is a new initiative that aims to assist in the growth of the professional theatre community in the Ottawa region.
What is our idea? We want to take Ottawa to “The Next Stage”. We propose a comprehensive program that nurtures the development of the Ottawa theatre community through the following:
Building the Ottawa Theatre Network – OTN currently enables the sharing of info and resources within Ottawa’s theatre community. The Next Stage project will provide OTN with funding to study the feasibility of moving beyond its current volunteer base, and to lay the groundwork for the Network to provide the community with shared administrative resources.
The Director’s Unit – an 8-month program that provides emerging theatre directors with the opportunity to develop their craft in professional environment under the guidance of experienced mentors.
The Producer’s Unit – an 8-month program that provides independent theatre producers with the opportunity to improve their arts management skills through mentorship, guest lectures, and hand’s on projects.
Masterclasses – a series of masterclasses designed to infuse new skills and ideas into Ottawa’s theatre community. The series will include Viewpoints training, exploration of new creation methods, and workshops in voice, design , and technical theatre.
Residencies – GCTC will offer a creation residency to one or two companies during its 2010-11 season. The residency will include rehearsal space, dramaturgical support and mentorship during the creation process of a new work.
Ottawa has passion, talent and creativity.
Vote to bring us to The Next Stage, to build Ottawa’s vibrant and creative theatre scene from the inside out! .

I truly hope Ottawa Theatre Network and GCTC qualify to receive a portion of the $500,000. I drive to Ottawa from Pickering, On a few times a year to see their productions. I've always enjoyed each performance and am impressed by the array of talent in Ottawa. I also love meeting the actors and crew. Good Luck!!! Dawn

Something people might want to consider (taken from the rules and regulation section): What are buzz worthy ideas? Want to improve your chances? Get people talking! We'll invite 2 bonus ideas to compete in the Semi-Finals based on how much buzz they've generated, so we encourage you to promote your idea on Facebook, Twitter, and all your online communities. So in other words, we need to continue spreading the word on all social networks! Keep up the good work everyone!!

Thanks to the Ottawa Citizen for recognizing the importance of developing Ottawa's theatre scene this morning in their pg 4 editorial. A strong and vibrant cultural life is one of the backbones of a great city!

Come see Children's Republic and you'll know exactly why Ottawa Theatre is worth supporting. It is a story that needs to be told and when the community gets to together to tell it the meaning resonates even more.

Theatre moves us, entertains us, educates us, and provokes us. It can serve as a mirror and reflect our lives or it can show us new possibilites. Good luck to the GCTC and the Ottawa Theatre Network in attempting to bring theatre in Ottawa to the next level! Waghorn: Does the GCTC have more projects coming in the spirit of the Children's Republic? Great to see the work of an Ottawa native on an Ottawa stage. Give us more!

If you are familial with the GCTC's work, you might also want to check out some of Ottawa's other newer companies, to only name a few, such as: SevenThirty Productions (whose next production is Shinning City, November 17 to 28) Ottawa Chamber Theatre (The Mechanicsville Monologues, November 18 to 28) Mi Casa! (Countries Shaped Like Stars and Inclement Weather, December 2-5) Please continue to encourage Ottawa theatre by not only voting daily, but also checking out some of the shows that are happening this season.

And don't forget the Wrecking Ball on Monday the 16th at Saint Brigid’s Centre, 314 St. Patrick Street. It's Ottawa's "one-of-a-kind co-lingual soirée of political theatre". The Ottawa Theatre Network will be there with our survey.
