King George School is a Kindergarten to grade eight school with approximately 360 students in the city of Brantford, Ontario. For approximately one year now, King George Schools' Playground Committee and its community have been actively working on improving their school playground. Our Playground Committee has attended "greening" workshops and have gained valuable knowledge on constructing an environmentally healthy playground. Our goal is to provide shaded playground structures to develop the student's large motor skills, sports field for large group activity, shaded passive areas for students to develop their social skills, shaded small group creative play areas and shaded outdoor classroom and learning centres.
Until this past summer, our school yard looked like a prison yard (fenced in asphalt with a strip of grass and few trees). With the funds raised so far, through sponsors, yard sales, fun fairs, spell-a-thon and shading grants, we have torn up a large portion of asphalt and replace it with sod, created a mini soccer field, place some seating rocks for an outdoor clasroom and are awaiting three trees to be planted. Thus, completing the first phase of our School Yard Greening and Activities Improvement Project.
The next phase in our project is to provide three separate shaded playground structures, one for each divisional group, primary/junior, intermediate and senior. Presently, there is no structured playground in the immediate area for the children to enjoy. A well diverse playground is very much needed in this community. In partnership with our school board, The Grand Erie District School Board, we are determined and devoted to enriching the children not only academically but physicallly, emotionally and socially improving the overall health and well being of the students and community members. With the greening changes we have made this far, there has already been a positive change in play on the playground and great reviews from community members.
A survey was given to the students and data analysis shows they are very much enjoying and utilizing what has been accomplished this far. However, they have great ideas for more improvements. Such as swings, slides, playground structures and shaded seating areas to name just a few, seem to be very popular ideas in each age group.
With the completion of our first phase of the project, we as a committee have begun sourcing playground equipment and trees thus noting the large cost involved in purchasing three main separate, age appropriate playground structures and well developed trees for shading throughout the playground area. With being awarded a significant grant our project could be executed and completed within a year's time. Resulting in an immediate, positive, rewarding outcome for the students and community involved in implementing this project.
This project benefits the students and community now and for future years to come 'Leaving a Legacy'. All the positive verbal reviews and responses from children have given us the motivation to aggressively continue on with our playground makeover. Please join us in making this playground makeover possible, to make a difference in our lives today and for future families.
Thank-you,
King George School Elizabeth Barnett
Update: Thank-you to all who joined in the celebration ceremony honouring the completion of Phase 1 in our School Yard Greening and Activities Improvement Project. What a terrific accomplishment thus far. This has been possible due to your continued dedicated support in any way possible. Congratulations!
Moving forward, King George School is now pursuing the design phase of our project. Recently communicating with a board approved Playground Consultant. The consultant is currently in the process of designing a well balanced, creative playground plan. Estimated budget for a grand playground to include playground structures, rubberized matting, tress, activity and seating centre’s $100,000.00.

This is a great school, but resources are limited. With the progress so far in improving the schoolyard, the students are already showing a greater pride in their school and in their community, and are becoming more responsible in looking after the yard to keep it clean and nice-looking. Your support will help build on the progress so far, and will help literally hundreds of kids become better citizens!

I've seen the playground progress so far, and applaud your efforts on making it a better place for the students and community as a whole. My son is in grade 5 at the school and raves about the field and rock area that you have placed already. My hat's off to all your hard work.

I'm kind of sad about this. I graduated at that school and it is so different now! But, it's about time they fixed up KG and made it look a bit more presentable.

The improvements to the playground so far are great and I look forward to seeing the next phase. It will take some time to get used to, but I like that the students have more green area to play on than before.

The playground is an absolutely necessary component in developing the emotional, social, physical, and academic well-being of children. Fantastic idea. Good luck in your endeavour!

Last year this community did amazing things raising money for the playground and we should all be very proud. With the money raised and the grants received we were able to implement the 1st phase of development, already improving the atmosphere and spirit as well as the appearance. There's still lots to do. This grant would help incredibly to take some of the pressure off of this community during already tough times. We have a very dedicated group of parents and staff members trying to make this goal a reality, but we can't do it without your votes. Please keep voting every single day!

Students from King George, we appreciate you making comments, but lets remember this is not a chat room like MommYLiciouS has already said. This is a good spot for the students to talk about why they want a new playground, possibly talk about how our playground was before any improvements and what you might like to see in our new playground. Why do we deserve to win over all the other proposals?

My son is in SK at this school and I am so pleased to see the efforts that are being made to improve the schoolyard. The little ones need a safe environment to play and perhaps it should be separated from the older students so there are less accidents. Please everyone keep voting and lets make the playground improvements a reality.
octobre 28, 2009 @ 11:03 EST
john_wildman
It is great to see the votes pile up. This schoolyard will also be of benefit to everyone in the surrounding area. The cosmetic look of a school is also a determining factor when people choose to move to a new community. If the school looks like a disaster they are less likely to choose that community. So for anyone considering or already selling their homes in the area. Please vote as well. Have we considered trying to get ourselves featured on CKPC community calendar or even have an interview on the CKCO kitchener tv station? Just a thought.

The top 25 ideas are the projects Aviva will be reviewing for funding from December 17/09 through to January 25/10. Please keep reaching more people to vote for this worthy project. I am overwhelmed with the support we have received. Thanks to everyone's diligence in voting, we made it to the semi-finals in the 1st. round. What an incredible job. Have a nice break from voting and lets come back strong on Dec. 2! Tell as many people as you can, the more people we have voting, the better our chances. Thanks again everyone and a special thanks to all our voters outside of our school families, your support is heartfelt.
novembre 2, 2009 @ 10:34 EST
Tom
Thank you all for helping us move into the semi finals. In order to make it through to the final 25, I estimate that we will have to get at least 1000 votes per day starting in December. If we can achieve that, we stand a good chance of making it to the final selections. As we were getting about 200 - 300 votes per day in the first round, that means that each supporter needs to find at least two other people to stand by us for a two-week period in the first two weeks of December. Please do your bit to find those two. Our community needs this project, not just for the school, but for the whole neighbourhood. WE CAN DO IT WITH YOUR HELP!!
novembre 3, 2009 @ 1:37 EST

I attended this school 35 years ago, and all of my children attended and graduated from King George, I hope that the school and neighborhood can provide creative opportunities for the kids and students of the future. Good luck with the campaign.

Now that you are through to the semi-finals, maybe your supporters could spare a thought for another small community trying to help its youth ? We are registered on this site as idea 1551. Bear River, Nova Scotia has its fair share of drug and alcohol related issues and we are trying to add a playground to the village to give our children a safe, fun environment in which to play and interact. Our hope is to make the playground the focus of cross-generational and cross-cultural socialisation, bringing people together on all levels to help create a more dynamic, involved society within the village. Please spare a minute to add your vote to our round 3 voting next week. It will mean so much to our coming generation to get this playground in place. Many thanks.

I hope you win. I will cast my vote daily. I attended King George School for only a few weeks when I was a child. I live in the surrounding area and I know that having a nice place to spend your recess can make all the difference. My daughter attended a school down the street and they didnt have a nice play area even though the back field was available. But I believe in having a calming beautiful place to sit and relax and take a break can really help these children learn. Good Luck.

The changes made thus far as greatly improved not only the look of the school grounds but also the function and practicality. It's wonderful to see the community getting involved to make such positive and healthy changes for the students. It's amazing what can be accomplished when a community unites and works together. This should have been started many years ago however it's better late than never! I will show support by voting everyday and encouraging others to do the same! I look forward to seeing the end results! Good luck and all the best to all those who are working hard to make this possible.

As a former Principal at King George, I am pleased to be working with Kristen at our school to engage support from our new school community for the playground project. This project has clearly captured the imagination and support of the community. This is a great way to continue "Raising the Bar"!

STUDENTS- Thank-you for taking the time and effort to vote for our school project. Your support and everyone else's is truly appreciated. However, this is not a "chat" or "gossip" or "random typing" site. Your comments are important and read by everyone visiting our site. Please show your support by positive comments or maybe mention what type of equipment or activity you would like to see in the playground? Be realistic and put some thought into your comments.

Today I voted to support your idea. I am also backing the idea of a youth centre proposed by the YMCA in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.... Idea acf1799. We are allowed to support more than one finalist. I strongly encourage every voter to help boost the Sault Youth Centre concept into the top 25. This allows you to multipy your influence in determining the outcome of this contest. Ted H-W

in response to the comment by valdez he claims the name "Prison Yard Playground" is a misnomer but if you had seen this playground that is the exact phrase that came to mind. Before my daughter went to King George I thought how horrible it would be to send her to a school that had a yard like a prison. Thanks to the wonderful efforts of the school and community it now has some green space but more is needed in the way of playground equipment, so that we don't feel like we are sending our kids to play in the "prison yard". Keep up the good work, we can do it.

I have been voting because this neighbourhood deserves it. I used to play on the equipment that was out front of the school, and was surprised to see it gone when I moved back to the area. It is time for the playground to be overhauled, I just hope that everyone will treat it with the respect, and all the other character traits, that the Grand Erie Board strives to teach our children. Best of luck!

Hello & here is vote but please read this carefully. I send this to all in the Top 15 this weekend. I am a supporter of Gabriola BC Clinic since Day 1 but I am NOT asking for your support. I have a different suggestion that I hope will appeal to EVERYONE voting daily: SEND A VOTE also at Yannick (2610). He is wallowing with under 5000 votes but only need US$10,000. We have a saying where I work in Africa: "When elephants compete it is the grass that suffers." Yannick's project deserves to have 25,000 votes more than any of us frankly ... he is disadvantaged and just needs transportation; many do not access the web site as it is mainly in French. I dare you to go read the "idea" and not be moved by it. Let's keep voting for ourselves as always, but also let's try to put Yannick on Top to point out that, ultimately, this whole contest is about the individual - every one of us. Let's make this our communal cause in these last days. Thanks for your time. BOOST YANNICK DAILY! (2610)

Thanks to everyone and here is a vote from me on Gabriola Island (acf 3958). But I am really here to urge you to join the "Top 15" Challenge to BOOST YANNICK who is still way near the bottom. Thanks to those who have already responded (even if you can not read French). He is a boy of 9 years age with Down's Syndrome & only needs $10,000 for some transport but is way below the 25 cutoff so will miss out if he doesn't get a BOOST. Everyone in the TOP 15 is golden with continued hard work. But let's put an individual - a real single face - on Top over the next few days. We all compete very well but let's show we can also cooperate for a good self-less common cause! Go visit Yannick at acf 2610.

I'm coming over from Thirsty Church to cast a vote for your project; to say "HI" and congratulations to your group on making it into the Semi-finals. Your supports should be very proud of themselves, because at the moment you are "leading the pack" with 17,090 votes. Our group is having a roller-coaster ride between 23rd and 25th place. If you wish, come have a look at see what we are all about. We welcome visitors to our posting and any support we can get over the next three days. We're proud of the support received from our small rural community of less than 200 people.

I'm giving you this vote this morning on Yannick's behalf and hope you support him. I'm not from Yannick's home area but he needs your help and threatens nobody. He only needs about $10K for transport; with Down's Syndrome in a small community at the age of nine life is not easy. I know life is hard on many people and children, but a communal show of support is what we have challenged everyone in the Top 15 to do as he is one of the few "individuals" on the whole board. Let's show him that all of Canada cares. BTW I am NOT from Yannicks camp but from another of the Top 15. Let's put a second vote from everyone over at Yannick's site. Thanks. Yannick is at 2610. Here's an idea ... bookmark the following and after you vote for your own project, click on the bookmark every day and vote for Yannick too: http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf2610

In regards to number of votes, I for one work at a company that has over 5000 ppl that work there and with the job I have and my 13yrs there I know pretty much everyone in the place and all it takes is to spread the word about the idea that I am supporting and ask if they would be willing to support us. So if only 1000ppl suppoted the idea you can figure they would have a spouse/freinds etc that they could pass the idea along and that would add up to some very high numbers of votes coming in. As for going from near last to first I'm not sure how you figure that. If you click on explore ideas then organize them as to most votes (which you do from the middle of the screen) you would see that we were always ranking in the top 3

This idea, I don't believe, has dropped any lower then the 25th position. Definitely check how your looking at ideas. If you go to the list of ideas by way of "Most recent", then we are close to the bottom of the page, if you go to list of ideas by way of "Most votes" we have steadily made it to the top section and stayed there. We also have spent many hours promoting our idea by way of newspaper, radio station, hung fliers with rip tags all over the city and basically told everyone we know including family, friends and acquaintances. We have huge support and are very proud of how hard people in our community have worked at pushing our idea and diligently voting everyday. Also, several of us are voting for other ideas that we think are good or important in some way or another, so we are helping others as well!

No offense, was talking about being in the last 25, and just curious about a comment on A Playground Makeover from High River, from what seems like an innocent young man saying: "also our school has made 100's of accounts just for voting (emal accounts) so I'd recommend you do the same." He really meant well and voted for our Playground Makeover, which is sweet and appreciated. Whatever happens, happens. They're all great ideas worthy of financial support.
décembre 14, 2009 @ 6:44 EST

Can I just clarify that the Matthew's comment posted on our High River Playground Makeover idea was NOT about High River making up 100's of email accounts. Our school has NEVER made up accounts, which is why we are struggling in 36th spot. Matthew says in his posted comment that he is referring to his own school with the 'Prison Playground' idea.

This idea has been in the top 15 since day 1 and the top 5 since day 3. This shows the amazing support they are getting from the community. I've looked out my front window for years at sad state of a yard these poor school children have had. Nothing but a big piece of asphalt behind the school, nothing for the children to play on, its downright sad. This school is in an economically depressed part of town and there just hasn't been any money to get these children a playground. I think its wonderful that these children finally got some grass to play on this past summer, now they just need some equipment. I hope they get 1st place, the other school they are competing for first with at least already has a playground, this school has NO playground, nothing for the children in this community to play on. Bravo to Brantford for getting behind these children, they deserve it, they need it.

In reference to King George School's vote count, this school has been in the upper portion of the running since the beginning of the semi-finals. There has never been a precipitous rise from the bottom. As for the vote we do have, we have been heavily supported by many schools in this board. As well, as I used to work in an Alberta school district, that district is also supporting us in a big way. We have not "made up" any E-mail addresses. All came through the generous support of a large number of people from across Canada. As principal of this school I thank all those who have given us their continued support.

acadie: I did vote for the child you asked for support for and will continue to do so and I will spread the word on my end. His is extremely important and deserves the votes too, as do many of the ideas in this competition. Remember all PRICE categories will win a prize. I don't believe there are that many semi-finalists in that price category, so hopefully he still has a good chance even if he's not in the top 25 ideas.

I have been keeping a very close eye on this last round and have to agree that it has only been very recently that your idea made it into the top five. Please don't insult our intelligence by trying to explain the "sorting process," we are more than aware of how to sort by most votes verses the other two choices. You don't have to defend your cause - everyone wants their idea to win and we wish everyone the best. What I find disturbing is the comments on this page, they speak for themselves - students are given class time to "chat" and make totally inappropriate comments even after being repremanded numerous times. The language is foul and it gives the impression that your students are not sincere, they are not serious about this. To "eli" who works in the very large office - could you not ask that they send a vote to "Yannick" so that he may be given the opportunity to win a wheelchair -he cannot compromise your position and it just seems like the right thing to do.
décembre 15, 2009 @ 12:06 EST

These are legitimate votes. This group of parents, teachers and students families have scouted far and wide for supporters for their idea by the sounds of the comments. For instance, I am from Hamilton and work with the sister of one of the families at this school that's why I'm voting for them. Great job guys, keep up the good work and don't let these comments discourage you!

Good morning from Gabriola. Here is a vote today with thanks for your support for Yannick (acf2610). I appreciate the support many of you have shown through the "Top 15 challenge" to push him into the Top 25 and please continue to send more votes and good wishes to Yannick and family. And, incidentally if any of you are inclined to help Yannick in a supplementary way or to send his family a Christmas card please look at the Gabriola posts (acf3958)) for more information and addresses or go to the www.ghcs.com website which is the official site listed in our idea.

PS And THANKS Lis for your support of Yannick. Through your various means you obviously have a strong and readily motivated group of voters here and Yannick could use that sort of help. We are all a sea of faces but it would be nice to push at least one individual into the Top 25 as a communal effort. Is your group up to that challenge? I am comfortably in the Top 15 going into these last 2 days and I am now lobbying harder for Yannick than for my own original (and consistent) cause. Anyway, Yannick is at acf 2610. He is nine years old, Down's Syndrome, and just needs a decent electric wheelchair so he can too enjoy life on the playground. As you say, Aviva has lots of money ($500,000) and his needs (under $10,000) will not threaten anyone in the Top 15.

I would just like to say that this is the best opportunity this school has had in the 4 years that my daughter has attended this school. Not only will this make this a nicer school but will provide an outlet for those children that are bored and resort to bullying! I think this will help in many aspects for the school and hope everyone can see the importance in this!!! This funding will contribute to solving not just one issue but many that have been of concern for families involved at King George!!

In response to people that are saying that this school cheated, I will have you know that there is a link on aviva's website to promote your idea on facebook. I myself have a friends list of 159 that at least half are supporting this school on a daily basis..and have been since this idea was posted a few months ago. I have friends in Australia, Norway, Germany, France..to name a few voting for this idea. With these friends also promoting this idea to their friends to help out a deserving idea, it quickly spreads to at least a quarter of their friends. Votes aren't limited to the city that they have been assigned to..they are limitless with the internet. I know for a fact that this school has done a lot of publicity, not only through the internet, but through word of mouth, newspapers and radio. If everyone with their ideas did the same thing by spending as much time as they have, they'd have numerous votes too. Just use your imagination as to what you can accomplish if you t

How about a community of over 80,000 people, plus all the support we are getting from across Canada. This project is being promoted all over our city, through the hard work of the school council, the media, and many businesses and community leaders that are supporting our cause by voting daily. ( Plus we've hardly gotten 4,000 votes in 24 hours. ) Yes we are getting alot of support but so are many of the others in the top, the other playground project trying for first gets just as many, if not more votes on a daily basis. This is school that desperately needs a playground, we have nothing for our 360 kids to play on. We need handicapped accessible equipment to meet many of our childrens needs, our children and the children of the community at large need a playground, somewhere they can get exercise, and play and have fun. HOw is it that our 360 kids are any less deserving than others. This is what our community and city are trying to accomplish, this is where we are getting our s

it is not just the students who vote. it is grandparents, parents, family members and friends who support the school as well as the schools in Brantford and surrounding area. Not to mention co-workers and just the general public. lots of advertising has been in place and a lot of work promoting this cause.

My votes are for all of you in the top 60.,realizing that not everyone will make the top 25. I am so amazed by all the comments in all of the categories and ideas. Every idea is deserving of support. This has brought so many communities together to support each other's ideas. Let's all vote for each other tomorrow. Thank you to Aviva for creating this opportunity. I know the lasting alliances and friendships between our communities can go on, long after the voting ends. Let us take time to reflect, not only on our effort for our own ideas, but for everyone who has supported our ideas, friends, family, neighbours, etc. Thank you.

I just voted for you! Please support Charity CHAMPS, idea acf2300. We are going to touch hundreds of thousands of youth across Canada. As one of only two under 10k ideas in the top 25, we are not competing with you for funding. A vote for us almost certainly goes to giving us valuable financing. We appreciate any help spreading the word!

Also, votes for Charity CHAMPS (acf2300) actually increase your chances of getting funding...if we can stay in the top 25, of course. Since we are asking for under 10k we are not going to be judged against you. Good luck!

Good luck to all the particpants. A tremendous amount of work has been done by the many communities with ideas in this event/ it shows what communities can do when they pull together behind a good cause. In a few hours this portion of the contest will be complete. I have seen and supported a number of otehr good ideas and great projects as I have participated in supporting King George School. The decision soon will be in the hand of the judges. So good luck to all of you and if we don't make it ourselves, congratulations to those f you who do. For our project, the tremendous coumunity support proves this is a worhy idea and deserving of the support of the people who live here. I am sure that regardlessof the outcome, we will get our playground completed. It may take a little longer and a lot more effort. But the support we have received here proves that we will get the help for our cause from within the community and those from outside who have generously devoted there time to hel

WOW! Last day for voting. A huge thank-you to Aviva for hosting such an exciting competition and wanting to put money back into the communities of our country. Also, a heartfelt THANK-YOU to ALL the dedicated voters (supporters) from near and far. The support we have received is overwhelming and gratefully appreciated. I would like to wish every idea good luck in the judging round. All the ideas are worthy and it would be nice to see everyone get a "piece of the pie". I wish the judges luck, as it will be tough to choose the winners. Voters - Please remind/tell everyone you know to vote today. Thank-you and good luck to everyone!

This bleak, stormy winter day is a reminder that it is a long way by ferry or boat to emergency medical services in Nanaimo, our nearest town. We need our own emergency medical center on Gabriola Island, so that we can be treated here, instead of needing a trip across the harbour.

You can increase your chances of getting funding by voting for Charity CHAMPS, idea acf2300. As an under 10k idea, we do not compete with you during the judging stage. So if we can stay in the top 25, you will automatically increase your odds of getting financing! Plus, you'll help us get hundreds of thousands of youth motivated to do good. Please help us and help yourself too by voting for Charity CHAMPS acf2300!

Awesome job everyone!! I am proud to have been part of this competition and to live in a community that has been as strong as we have throughout. To all the hard work of our students, my hats off to you, we know how much effort a lot of you have put into voting everyday and spreading the word. Whether we end up winning a prize or not; we are all winners. I believe we've given our students an important lesson in life. To receive something, you must work hard for it and there is nothing wrong with hard work. I think we've also learned what it means to be part of a supportive community, where every one is working towards a common goal. To Aviva, thank you for offering this competition encouraging people to support worthy causes and to become involved in making their community a better place to live. I don't envy the judges, as every idea is worthy, it's not going to be an easy decision I'm sure. Good luck to all the ideas in the final round and I hope every one who does not receive a priz

I will add my comments to the round of congratulations. All the ideas sent in designed to support people, heal the sick, care for the injured, support communities, etc. have gone a long way to show how impressive Canada as a nation is in thinking about others than themselves. The over 2000 entries were all worthy. For those in the top 25, again all are worthy projects. All show how communities can come together to support a cause. I say thank you to all those who supported our cause and a special thanks to the community around our school and the students within. Whatever the outcome of the final judging, all can be proud of the efforts put forward to achieve a positive end. Thanks also to AVIVA for showing us all what is possible. Good luck with the judging. Comparing apples to oranges will be a tough task.

There are a lot of people to thank and or congratulate! First and foremost, Aviva, for offering this opportunity to Canadians-generously giving back to communities. Elizabeth, for submitting our idea and being instrumental in its success. Students and families for your hard work, voting daily and doing a great job of gathering supporters. We hope the community will enjoy years of activity/relaxation in King George School's backyard! A special thanks to our families, friends and Brantford for everyone's dedication in voting. Finally, the Grand Erie District School Board for your support during every phase of our project. Without everyone's votes this wouldn't have been possible, so be proud of what we have accomplished so far. The last thing I'd like to do is congratulate all of the winners for their hard work and worthy ideas!
