McQuesten Neighbourhood is the second most impoverished neighbourhood in Hamilton. One challenge is having easy access to fresh produce. There is one small food bank in the community which faces many shortages.

Our Neighbourhood has a high population density that is quite diverse ethnically, racially, religiously and by age. Our Team is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those of us living, working and playing in the neighbourhood. We view our neighbours as our most valuable asset.

Our idea is to build and develop a large community garden on land provided by City Housing Hamilton. The garden will provide fresh produce to the participants with excess product being donated to the food bank.

While the garden will provide the much needed foods it will also develop friendships and a sense of community to all. Our vision is that the garden will be an interactive tool where we develop team work and enable the neighbours to learn new skills such as seed preservation, harvesting and preserving the food for winter. These learning opportunities will be open to all ages from children through to our seniors. The garden will teach the importance of environmental sustainability by using composters and rain barrels while at the same time practicing organic gardening with crop rotation.

Community development will be a key element in this garden and we will facilitate the gardening of all members of our community. The raised beds will allow those with disabilities to participate, and a supply of tools will assist those who cannot afford to purchase them to enjoy the pleasures of gardening. We will encourage one another while sharing experiences and learning new foods and ingredients which other cultures will be growing. The opportunities for exercise and interaction will be invaluable in increasing the health of the participants. With weekly BBQs, family meetings and workshops, the strong community bonds will solidify into a positive and vigorous neighbourhood.

Workshops will include such activities as garden art, guest lectures on various topics and cooking lessons. As the project develops and grows the opportunities for volunteerism will be present and encouraged.

The community garden model we are developing will be able to be translated into other gardens in the green spaces in and around some parks and schools in our neighbourhoods, so that more families can benefit and revitalize the area.
