Our idea is to motivate youth across Canada to achieve one million hours of volunteer work in their communities.
If we’re going to change the world, we’ve got to start at home. Changing attitudes. Changing priorities. Changing the way we think about where and how we live. Through Free The Children we will work with youth across Canada to collectively give one million hours to local volunteerism. Cleaning up a park. Removing graffiti from a local convenience store wall. Lending a hand at a local food bank or soup kitchen. Helping young, neighbourhood children learn how to read. All are ways we can make a positive impact on our communities. The possibilities are endless!
Our idea is to send an energetic and lively team of speakers to sweep across Canada, visiting schools where they will inspire, educate and empower youth to volunteer. Students will participate in seminars and workshops, where they will put together action plans and volunteering avenues for change. By making a tangible impact in the communities in which they live, young people certainly have the power to change the world – all they need is opportunity and encouragement.
This is the foundation on which Free The Children is built. When Craig Kielburger was 12 years old, he found his passion for social change. While looking for the comics one morning over breakfast, he came across an article about a child labourer from South Asia named Iqbal who was killed for standing up for children’s rights. The tragic story moved Craig to take action. After approaching his classmates, he started Free The Children and began speaking out for the rights of children like Iqbal all over the world.
Today, Free The Children is the world’s largest network of children helping children through education with more than one million youth involved in its innovative and development programs in 45 counties. Through domestic empowerment programs and leadership training, Free The Children inspires young people to develop as socially conscious global citizens and become agents of change for their peers at home and around the world.

Mr. Kielberger, Leave the money to the little guys - the small grass roots charities. There are hundreds that do not have access to the exposure or existing funds that you and your organization are so fortunate to be provided with. Perhaps you should dig deep into your own pockets to fund this initiative.

Volunteer is a wonderful way to help get the message out. I will pay less attention to the world news and choose a subject to get out and stay positive. There are so many areas I want to be a part of. World hunger, equality within race, creed, religion and sexual orientation needs attention from us all. I will commit to make a difference in each of these areas.

Yesterday AND today I voted to support your idea. I am also backing the idea of a youth centre proposed by the YMCA in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.... Idea acf1799. We are allowed to support more than one semi-finalist. I strongly encourage every voter to help boost the Sault Youth Centre concept into the top 25. This allows you to multipy your influence in determining the outcome of this contest. Join the "Buzz"!Ted H-W

A few people are saying money isn't necessary for this initiative but they are wrong! imagine how many more students FTC could potentially reach with these funds? That way they could give more money to villages in need of clean water, and safer schools! My life was changed by a Free the Children speech. It is because of that one speech that I knew I wanted to get involved. I have been involved with FTC for 5+ years now and even moved to Toronto so I could volunteer more with them. This could change lives. It has changed so many people's perspectives already! Please keep voting!
