Our idea is to motivate youth across Canada to achieve one million hours of volunteer work in their communities.

If we’re going to change the world, we’ve got to start at home. Changing attitudes. Changing priorities. Changing the way we think about where and how we live. Through Free The Children we will work with youth across Canada to collectively give one million hours to local volunteerism. Cleaning up a park. Removing graffiti from a local convenience store wall. Lending a hand at a local food bank or soup kitchen. Helping young, neighbourhood children learn how to read. All are ways we can make a positive impact on our communities. The possibilities are endless!

Our idea is to send an energetic and lively team of speakers to sweep across Canada, visiting schools where they will inspire, educate and empower youth to volunteer. Students will participate in seminars and workshops, where they will put together action plans and volunteering avenues for change. By making a tangible impact in the communities in which they live, young people certainly have the power to change the world – all they need is opportunity and encouragement.

This is the foundation on which Free The Children is built. When Craig Kielburger was 12 years old, he found his passion for social change. While looking for the comics one morning over breakfast, he came across an article about a child labourer from South Asia named Iqbal who was killed for standing up for children’s rights. The tragic story moved Craig to take action. After approaching his classmates, he started Free The Children and began speaking out for the rights of children like Iqbal all over the world.

Today, Free The Children is the world’s largest network of children helping children through education with more than one million youth involved in its innovative and development programs in 45 counties. Through domestic empowerment programs and leadership training, Free The Children inspires young people to develop as socially conscious global citizens and become agents of change for their peers at home and around the world.
