JOE’S PLACE-HUNGRY FOR HOPE
WHO ARE WE? For 15 years, Joe’s Place -Generation Hope Youth Inc. (www.joesplaceyouthcentre.ca) has been providing hope for youth who are hungry to be mentored, challenged and given opportunities regardless of race, religion or income level. Although Joe’s Place started small in a warehouse apartment, the donation of a 24 000 sq/ft building has made us one of Canada’s largest youth centres. We are a non-profit, registered charity and rely on donations to keep running. We provide a safe and fun environment on weekend nights that includes video games, pool tables, music and events. A 30-foot tall, 4 sided climbing wall challenges youth to achieve new heights. In addition to drop-in nights, Joe’s Place offers work skills training, small groups, a teen mom’s support group and a dance team. We sponsor youth to attend camps and retreats as well as day trips to various sporting and community events. We are focused on relationships and committed to building character and leadership skills in youth.
WE NEED A KITCHEN TO FEED OUR YOUTH! Youth are the future of our nation and are hungry to be mentored, challenged and given opportunities. We strive to meet these needs and realize that healthy food is an integral part of this. The need for food in our programs has continued to grow as our programs expand but we do not have a kitchen in our building. Volunteers currently prepare food off site and transport this hot and messy cargo to Joe’s Place in their vehicles. After these meals are fed to hungry and thankful youth, the dirty dishes have to be transported off site to be washed. The community has responded to this need and we have a generous donation of commercial kitchen equipment waiting to be installed. We need money to install this equipment, renovate the kitchen and café area, and hire a part-time staff to supervise this project. Not only will this help us to feed our hungry youth, but we hope to use this kitchen for sustainability fundraising and to train our youth in restaurant work skills. We do not have the money to make this project happen without your support!
WHAT WILL IT ACHIEVE? 1. Hungry youth will be fed and better able to participate in our many programs. 2. Youth will be given hope through special events like our Christmas banquet. 3. Sales from this new kitchen will help create sustainability funding. 4. Youth will gain work skills. 5. As youth gain hope through mentorship, new opportunities and work skills, they become leaders in the community and contribute to a brighter future for all.
SUSTAINABILITY PLAN The installation of this donated equipment and this new café area will allow us to start running fundraising lunches on weekdays. This will bring in downtown business people who can tour our facility to see all the ways in which we help the youth of Moose Jaw. So, not only will this lead to income from food sales, but will raise public awareness leading to an increase in support and donations. We will also be applying for employment grants to cover future staffing.
WE ONLY NEED $49 999 FROM THE AVIVA COMMUNITY FUND For most people to take on a project of this magnitude the cost would be upwards of $200 000. With the amount of volunteer labour, in-kind & cash donations and discounts that we receive from our faithful supporters we believe we will be able to accomplish this project with only $49 999. Without funding from Aviva this project will not happen!

Excellent idea. The next step in helping Moose Jaw youth is exactly the kind of work-mentorship idea the Joe's Place Kitchen provides, along with supporting an astoundingly worthwhile charity.

This plan and idea has been a long time in coming and it's so close! Everything seems to be in place but they need a push to get it going. It's like they've got a place they need to go and a sweet car to go there in, but the tank is empty.

I have watched this plan from its start point right now I can turn around and look at the goal behind me. I know that if this Goes threw then the Youth of Moose Jaw will learn so many more skills then the ones we can already teach them, like how to cook proper meals and how to take care of themselves and a family in the future. This is about the community helping the community.

I was one of Joe's first Bouncers/Doormen, and I stopped in a few months ago to see what it had become. WOW! It started on Main Street, in a loft with a whole lotta love, and now it's ready to continue being a place of hope for youth, and a permanent fixture in Moose Jaw's Downtown. Vote For Joe's Place, And You Will Be Making A Difference In Your World!

The emphasis on mentorship seems prominent in the activities and plans listed above. I love how they expect to use even the building and setting up of there projects as opportunity to work with kids, instead of just waiting till the final project is complete. Go Joes!

Joes place has done so much for the community so much already but this kitchen would help them reach out and help in many more ways I know some youth that aim for being head cooks one day and this kitchen would help them improve in there skill.

I wish Joe's Place was in my city so I could organize and teach cooking and nutrition classes in the kitchen once I become a dietitian! It's my dream job! I'm super excited about the kitchen. Having the kitchen will be an amazing vehicle to mentor, feed kids, and teach through!

We all need Food and we all need hope. Some weeks the only place the youth get a nutritious meal is Joe's place. There is no better way then to share a meal together to offer hope for the week. It would be awesome to have a kitchen at Joe's Place in order to prepare meals and a place to share life together. Vote 4 Joe's

This kitchen would help many of the youth out..I remember when I first moved out on my own..(I got kicked out when I was 15) the only meals i would have for the week were the ones at joes place I didnt have the money to buy food and pay for rent..Joes place provided so much for me of what I need, Food, A place to go to be safe, and most of all frindship. Now I am glad to help out at joes place as much as I can to help the youth who need the same help I needed

I have been coming to Joe's for the last three years as a volunteer and this place has definately changed my life. I have had a pretty easy life, but Joe's has opened my eyes to the reality that there are people who are less fortunate then us barely getting byers...There are people who aren't getting by. This kitchen would definately help us help those people. I have seen kids's lives changed because of this place, and I've only been here for three years...That's so cool.

Letting you guys know, this is a place where teens of all races, sexes, orientations, and religious affiliations can come without being judged, hated, or abused. This place is full of love. The volunteers genuinely love doing what they do, not for anything that they will get out of it, and they get so much out of it, but because they love giving out of love to the kids who have nothing.

I am a four year volunteer at joes, I moved from my home to come and be here year round and not just during the school year. I believe in Joe's and my life is a testimony to that. A kitchen would really help us all out, we don't even have a decent sink to wash dishes in! The sink is downstairs and in a room that is no help to anyone. To be able to prepare food, in a safe clean kitchen and the ability to wash dishes after would give ease to the people who generously share their time, money and cooking skills to give to the youth we serve. Joe's place is a worthy cause to give to, they are integral and straight forward who just want to give to youth. Ask any of the extremely underpaid overworked staff who never stop giving.

I had the priviledge of visiting Joe's Place last May and was seriously impressed! My daughter attended Joe's Place frequently and volunteered there as well. The staff are amazing and do miraculous things with very little resources. This funding would allow them to make a greater impact in a needed area. You can also make a one time donation or monthly pledge to help fund the staff who are, with great results, working to positively change the lives of Moose Jaw's youth. For information please visit www.joes-place.ca. The efforts we make today impact the results of tomorrow!

Strange but true, one of the best ways to show you care, is by sharing food. Hospitality, and healthy food for growing youth, AND practical skills-training AND fundraising capabilities. What´s not to like? This is a great plan, and I join with many others in being excited to see it carried out!

You know I have been at Joe's Place since I was 14 and now I am 27 and I am still going there. Why? Because it has impacted my life greatly and I know it will continue to do so. I believe that with the change of our culture we need to learn to change with it so that we can continue to impact the lives of kids. But I have also seen that some things don't change and that people are still hungry and starving in other parts of the world and even our own. So what can we do to make a difference? We can send money to those places to help bring support and food for those who hunger and we can also send money and support to help feed those who hunger in Moose Jaw. Joe's has always had a heart focus towards these youth in Moose Jaw, to these generation and I hope that with all of our support and votes that he can achieve that goal and reach even more youth. Making a difference in their lives even if that means letting them having a chance to eat.

This place actually works, I am a product of JOE's Place. I grew up in the Jaw, and was in real trouble as a youth. This place brought me into the fold, and 15 years later, I have been serving youth and other organizations from a position of Assistant manager at a Bible college in Alberta!

This place is great for the youth of Moose Jaw. There is really nothing to do as a kid in MJ, and Joe's Place, was that thing you could do. (Stay out of trouble, meet new friends, create new memories). Joe's Place cares about the youth of Moose Jaw and wants to make a place that they can go, have fun and just be yourself. What a difference they have made so far...Think of what they will do in the future

At times, joes place was the only place I had.. I've made some of my closets friends there, and the staff I still talk to daily, even though I no longer live in Moose Jaw. I went to Joe's Place as a teen. I had lots of home problems, school problems, and someone was always there to hear them. I'm so grateful for all the staff that were there, to help me through these. The people that work down there helped me to be a better person. I now have a child and I hope that this place will be around when she gets older. I recommend this place for all the teens of Moose Jaw, they have so much to offer. My brother that is 7 years younger goes there, because it's a safe place for him to be. There isn't much places for the youth to feel safe anymore. Please vote for the kitchen, it will help the community.

I attended Joes place as a teen as did my two older sisters before me. The environment there is amazing and it is the place to be on friday and saturday nite. I moved away with my family in my late teens and now i wish that there is a place like Joes where I live for my younger brother. Joes place keep me and my sisters out of trouble. When I go back to visit MJ I always stop in to see the changes Joe's has done with the community. I believe that the kitchen will benifit Joe's, the teens and will change the lives of many ppl. Everybody needs to know how to cook and with this kitchen it will give teens a chance to enriche their future.

I have worked with Joe's Place as a volunteer, full time staff and at one time even attended as a youth. Joe is one of the most incredible lads out there. He is a vision and passion to see the needs of "at risk" youth addressed in practical and meaningful ways. The prospect of food is always a touchy subject. Every good drop in centre is centered around a kitchen which can be used to feed those that are less fortunate. Joe's Place has managed to generate a following not because they are offering free handouts but rather the kids trust and respect Joe's staff and they have found a Safe PLace among the pitfalls of the adolescent journey. I have seen the kitchen equipment and the space for this kitchen and I know with the proper funding Joe will create a space that will be used for many different reasons. It will provide education for the youth looking to pursue culinary experience, it will put food in the stomachs of those youth who maybe can not attain this at home. FInally it

Joe's Place is reaching the youth in Moose Jaw in an amazing way!!!! I volunteered on one occasion to help feed some of the youth there, and it was so difficult, due to the lack of kitchen facilities. Having a fully functional kitchen would just really increase their ability to impact the youth!!!! I have met youth whose lives have been totally turned around for good, through Joe's Place. I vote for Joe's Place!!!!

Over the years many youth have benefited from the work of Joe's Place. At a time in their lives when they were most vulnerable and damaged from poor living circumstances and wrong choices, the youth who have attended Joe's Place have had opportunities to develop under positive mentors, learn work skills and to end up choosing adaptive lifestyles and successful careers. Kudos to the staff, volunteers, and directors of Joe's Place! They certainly deserve support for the new kitchen.

Joes Place is one of the most needed youth centers in MooseJaw's community . Why is because I belive it give's the youth of the community a chance to stay focust in life, also to fufill their dreams with in life its self. It also alows troubled youth to stay off the streets and also a chance to change their life's around with the acceptance to fit in with the community. but just to keep it basic all i can say is it's the right place too be if you would like to have the oppertunaty to builed great social skills, leardership, voleteer work,Bible study,ect.. From living the life as a gangmember for nine years, it really gave me the oppertunaty I've been waitin been for, To move forward with my future and to also walk onside with our loard.Even tho I may struggle somtimes it allows me to get back on track with out being judged. so if it can work for me it can work for you.

Joe's Place has been in Moose Jaw for a lot of years. All three of my boys have gone as youth, and now go as volunteers. I recall taking them to Joe's Place when it was in the apartment (I believe that was it's first location) and to it's newest location downtown. Joe took me on a tour and the activities that they have for the kids are fantastic!! (The climbing wall looks cool!) A kitchen would a a fantastic bonus for them. Something that they could DEFINATELY use to help the kids, and to help the center with their sustainability funding. PLEASE vote for Joe's Place and help them help the kids, and help your community.

Joe's place has had such a positive impact upon the community of Moose Jaw. Young people have an opportunity to attend a facilty which is safe, but allows them to express themselves in a positive way. One such evidence of this was a comment directed to me about Joe's Place. A person who was in a government position working with youth in the city suggested that if this person was to recommend a youth to a facility which would have a positive moral impact on him or her, that the recommendation would be to send the youth to Joe's Place rather than their own. I believe that they see the benefit of a program based upon a solid moral foundation.

Joe's Place is fantastic. Whilst most people moan and complain about what needs to be done differently to make the nation a better place, Joe is quietly effecting change through his acts of kindness to a broken and lonely generation. He has worked tirelessly for many years building this project from the ground up on solid foundational principles and values. In addition, he inspires others to join him on the journey and equips them with the skills and motivation to go out and do the same thing in their own neighbourhoods and communities. Joe knows how to multiply the impact of this funding and bring great value-added measures. There are no better hands to place this funding into than Joe's hands for the benefit of those most in need.

Students Helping Students seems like another very good idea, but I support Joe's Place because it is close to home, close to my heart, and we will do our best to continue with the goal of the kitchen whether or not we get this money, even if it will be hard to do. I think it is inappropriate to invade someone else's space to promote something else, however, to "HEY!!!!" As I said before, I do like the idea behind Students Helping Students. Why don't you bring a little extra with your lunch that you bring to school? That's a great way to start. That's one way that I helped out as a kid...

I've never been to Joe's place, I don't even know what it looks like, or how many kids are there. But does this all really matter? What matters is that what they are trying to do for their kids and that they are trying to do it through the lord. I know one person who goes to Joe's place and I know of the wonderful things it has done for them. Joe's place has changed them greatly and sent them places they may have never been able to go to. If it wasn't for Joe's place I would have most likely never met this person and trust me, that would be a great shame because they have helped change my life greatly. Sure, I may not know of Joe's place on a personal level but that doesn't mean I don't want to. It sounds like an awesome, possitive, and good learning area. From reading all these comments you can see how big of an inback Joe's place has on the youth and even the adults. My prayers are with what you guys are trying to do and I wish you the best of luck in your dreams now and dreams soon

Joe's Place has been one of the greatest assests to Moose Jaw since it started over 10 years ago. It is certainly filling a large need for our youth. Joe & his wife work sacrificially because they believe that these young peoples lives are so important and hopeful. They are the future hope not just for our city but beyond. There are also many volunteers; it's just such a great work to be involved in. It is not just a place to go, but a family; a place to belong and a place for kids who are hungry - in so many ways - to be fed.

This is such a place of hope for Moose Jaw. Not just the youth but for the whole city! If you are from Moose Jaw you can't deny the impact Joe's place is having on the city. They are building a community of youth that are and will continue to be valuable contributing citizens of this city or where ever they go in the world. This opportunitiy for a kitchen will only help build that into the youth even more! YEH!!!! I can so pumped about this posibility.

Wow. Joe's Place. I was blown away by this organization the first time I visited. They have so much to offer the kids. The kitchen though definitely needs A LOT of work. There is nothing there and the potential of what could be done with something like a sink and a stove, and a oven is enourmous for both the staff and for the youth that love going there. It's a very special opportunity.

I believe feeding people is the absolutely most important need they have. How do you even think straight, in any domain, if you are hungry? How do you learn? How much stress is suffered if you are in need of good nutrition? I'm one of the people who volunteer by helping to cook food and transport it to Joe's Place. PLEASE.....Joe's needs a kitchen. How much more effectively we could serve the youth of this community (and ultimately our whole community - you cannot impact one segment without impacting others) if we could augment this fine facility with a dependable, safe, clean kitchen in which good wholesome food is prepared and served, and which can also be used to teach them how to effectively cook for and feed themselves. What dreams could be realized if we only had this tool!!

a lot of those kids dont have a family, a home, food... we are volunteering to provide those to them! please help up
octobre 24, 2009 @ 11:28 EST

Food is one of the most basic needs yet it touches every aspect of our lives. If you're hungry you can't concentrate in school and your general health is poor. Having a place to go where you can eat healthy food is crucial. I was blown away by the passion and the vision of the staff at Joe's Place. The love they have for the youth of their community is demonstrated in the time, money and endless amounts of energy they pour into making that place as effective as they can. To many it may seem humble but because they know how to make use out of what they have that building is being used to it's fullest potential. I know for a fact that they will keep going just as strong regardless of what happens through this contest, it just might take them longer. If they need a kitchen to make that place better, give it to them.

Joes Place is such an incredible youth center. Im so thankful for the people I have met there. Every weekend seems to have a theme and sweet activities to be involved in. A kitchen would be wonderful to serve all of the youth, especially for special events like a christmas banquet. May The Lord bless all those who attend and contunie to work in these youth lives.

NOTICE: Did you know that if your proposal wins, YOU will not be implementing it, YOU won’t even be involved in the project. READ the FUNDING IDEAS page of the Aviva site very carefully….near the bottom is this little gem!!! Aviva-chosen charities, government and public agencies will be running your project WITHOUT you and without your input! In the meantime, Aviva is collecting lists of email addresses and their site neglects to promise not to spam your friends and supporters with their promotional junk or to sell the lists to others. Just thought you should know. Yours truly, someone who just backed out when I saw the fine print!
octobre 26, 2009 @ 11:32 EST
curtis
Do you mean this fine print: "If your Idea is selected, we will contact you to see if you want to be involved in the creation of the project, where it is practical to do so." I firmly believe that if 'Hungry For Hope' is chosen, that Joe's Place will be nothing but glad to participate with the implementing of a Kitchen in their facility. Thank you for your concern and your support.
octobre 27, 2009 @ 2:13 EST
Mommy_76
I think Grace may have misunderstood the wording. This next is directly from the FUNDING IDEAS page that Grace mentioned. "...We're providing the resources to make your change happen. By submitting an idea, you're not committing to do any work beyond your submission (unless, of course, you'd like to be involved). If your idea is selected, we'll contact you to let you know and see if you want to be involved in the creation of the project if it's practical to do so..." It sound to me like you don't HAVE TO BE involved in the implementing of your idea, but you can CHOOSE TO BE involved however. I've been to Joe's PLace and HOWEVER this idea gets implemented for them it is a BLESSING!! GO JOE GO!!

Keep those votes coming in!!! This is an amazing opportunity for Joe's Place. Our son has volunteered there for over 4 years, we have visited there several times, have met some of the kids, and have heard the stories of how "Joe's Place" has impacted & changed their lives around. I have seen the kitchen equipment and have heard the amazing story of how it was donated. THEY NEED THIS OPPORTUNITY SO MUCH! It will have such a positive impact on these kids. Aviva Community Fund
Just to give everyone assurance from the Aviva Community Fund team, the RFP process primarily exists for individuals who have an idea but may not have the means to put it into action. Assuming an organization is well suited to implement an idea, they will be given the opportunity to execute it if their idea is selected. This is the case for the vast majority of ideas we've seen submitted by organizations so far. Once the winning entries are chosen, we would be thrilled to have the organizations responsible involved in bringing the idea to life! We've deliberately given registrants the opportunity to opt-in to future messaging from Aviva - we promise not to spam anyone with promotional e-mail and we would never sell your personal information (feel free to read more in our privacy policy). The terms and conditions and legal requirements are included for the protection of everyone involved.

Hi Mommy and Aviva; the problem with what you are saying is that you gloss over your very clearly worded statement that you will farm out the winning projects to various charities, government, etc for implementation. As well you back track from that clearly worded statement by now using tricky wording "you can be involved if practical'. Also, this competition was open to all people, note that now Aviva is talking about 'organizations'. Many of the project ideas have been sumitted by individuals and they are working just as hard as the big organizations to get votes, yet two things are happening...Aviva is talking 'organizations' not individuals or proposals and secondly, if you are not an organization and if you get into the finals, your project WILL BE implemented by others.... How logical is sit to put individuals and non-organizational types to all this work when there is a hidden agenda to work with organizations only?? I was going to submit a proposal based on proven methods o

I remember growing up as a teen in Moose Jaw and Joe was just starting out with Joe's Place. We were always warmly welcomed whether he knew us or not and it's amazing to see how this little seed has grown! I worked at 7-11 for a while and seen Joe in on a regular basis picking up stuff for his place and occasionally bringing the whole gang in for a treat as well. He's a stand up guy and this gathering place for Kids is exactly what the city needs....lets help it expand to it's fullest potential to help the maximum amount of kids get ahead and maybe have a bit of fun in the process.

Joe's Place does need a new kitchen . . . take this from a mother of 5 at the time, l loaded 5 children into a minivan, plus 6 crock pots full of spaghetti sauce, plus one huge cooler full of already cooked noodles plus 80 homemade cookies. . . sudden stops of any kind can spell disaster. . .and that shifting sound is really not a sound you want to hear or " Mom the crock pots are moving!" Save our van interiors and feed our kids, vote Joe's!

BRIERCREST STUDENTS who are feeling torn... YOU CAN VOTE FOR BOTH PROJECTS. Us and RU! It would be great to see them go through in round 1 so they don't have to start from scratch in round 2 cuz it could get much tougher in that round. We will both need all of Briercrest's votes to make it in this thing! But we at Joe's Place do want to finish 1st in this round cuz it's all up the judges in the end! DreamLoveCure is creeping up very fast. Joe from Joe's Place

So, is Joe's place competing with RU? Because I was told they were not competing against each other.
octobre 28, 2009 @ 6:17 EST

Well it is a competition and not everyone is going to win. What we need to realize is that both Joe's Place and RU will need everyone at Briercrest to vote for both of us to really be in any sort of position in the semi-finals. If we split Briercrest's votes we will both lose! We are really up against big city centres like Toronto that have a huge voting base.

I believe this project would change so many young people for the better. It would be a shame to let an opportunity like this to pass us by. When an individual asks for help to get ahead when they are unable to do so for themselves, we step up and give them that hand up to reach that next level. Now Joe's Place is not in this for themselves but for for our youth in need today. These are our youth who really have an inward desire to be fully productive and successful but have circumstances that have them believing that there is no hope and they can not become what they have dreamed about. Joe's Place is in it for the long run so that youth can attain their full potential. Joe's Place has shown success through their mentoring and varied programs, so that youth contribute positively in community and have even given back to Joes's Place by being volunteers to the next generation of youth that are now coming there. They have also been instrumental in helping to develop and to even run new programs that could be of use to this next generation.
novembre 5, 2009 @ 4:25 EST

This kitchen began with an idea and then was talked about and researched and then there was help given with the receiving of the equipment. Next came more planning and the need for people who would be qualified to provide a program to run such a kitchen along with the plans that they wanted to develop in our youth with skills they could use later in the community. Also with such an endeavour there were requirements that had to be made in the facility, which all had to be done in readiness, this has been a project that has taken a while to come to this point in its development. While this one was taking longer to come to fruition, other projects were being worked on. Now all is in readiness for the kitchen, except for the final stage of the actual set up. They need our support to help them get to that next level of implementation bringing that initial idea to its outcome. The youth are involved in every project, they help right beside the qualified volunteers and learn new skills a

and also develop excellence in all they do. They also have attained a sense of accomplishment when they have been apart of something that becomes successfully completed. They take ownership in that they have played a part to make Joe's Place what it is today. Joe's Place takes everyone, all those who go to and all those who support behind the scenes. Joe's Place began with one idea and has grown to be even much, much more. This was not for personal success but for the betterment of our youth for today and into the future. I have witnessed many changes in the youth as they have grown. They learn to make choices and to work through the consequences of choices that may be were not so wise. They learn to trust that they will not be abandoned or judged but accepted and encouraged to develop to their full potential. I am in full support for this kitchen development and if you ever get to come and see first hand what Joe's Place is all about, I would strongly recommend it. Also I kno

Joe's Place is the BEST thing to happen to Moose Jaw in this decade. Our youth have a safe place to go, to learn how to work, to communicate, to mentor, to find answers for questions no one else has been able to answer before. They are NOT on the streets at night, they are hanging out at Joe's Place, free from addicting influences or negative ways of life! Get on board with HOPE! Hope for the present, Hope for the future, Hope for our city, hope for our province, and HOPE FOR CANADA! Our future governmental leadership may well come from someone who spends time at Joe's Place!

Now that you are through to the semi-finals, maybe your supporters could spare a thought for another small community trying to help its youth ? We are registered on this site as idea 1551. Bear River, Nova Scotia has its fair share of drug and alcohol related issues and we are trying to add a playground to the village to give our children a safe, fun environment in which to play and interact. Our hope is to make the playground the focus of cross-generational and cross-cultural socialisation, bringing people together on all levels to help create a more dynamic, involved society within the village. Please spare a minute to add your vote to our round 3 voting next week. It will mean so much to our coming generation to get this playground in place. Many thanks.

So excited to be able to cast my vote for Joe's Place. Let's get that kitchen. The kitchen is such an important part of a home where we feed body and soul. The people who have been making and bringing in the food, and doing dishes in this way are to be commended, but how much better it will be to have a fully functional kitchen on site. Youth can be taught important cooking skills, and the value of cleaning up, life skills, as well as having good food. VOTE FOR JOE'S .

Last night we served food to about sixty youth. Food prepared elsewhere and brought in with containers wrapped in towels. We heated water to sterilize serving utensils. It would have been great to have had a kitchen sink for before and after! The food was great. The facilities aren't. Do the kids complain? Never. They're excited about getting fed. And we're excited to serve them and have time to get to know them and encourage them. Will you please tell some other people you know to vote, vote ,vote?

This is a huge need for Joe's Place!!! I went to Joe's periodically when I was a young teenager while visiting relatives in town when it was in a small, always crowded building. It is amazing to come back after my secondary education to see Joe's Place move downtown Moose Jaw into a facility that can support the large amount of young people in the city. Whenever I run into Joe at the gym, he is always talking about the wonderful things that God is doing at Joe's Place and he does everything for the youths of this city! Giving out such an award for such a tremendous cause would not only help the youths of today, but only God knows how many people it would effect and how many lives would be changed 10, 15, 25 years down the road!!!! When I was a teenager I went there, then became a junior then senior volunteer there, then spent a few summers employed there. I think anyone who has been a repeat-face there over the years has the same impression: Joe has so much vision, and things are CONSTANTLY changing and growing, as the help of new people and their ideas are welcomed, and as Joe himself tirelessly looks for ways to offer more opportunity to the youth of the city. It has been awsome to see the place change over the years, and this strikes me as the next (excellent) step. It will have a great impact, and open up many new, meaningful opportunities to help people. I say: Let´s Get Cookin´ with Joe´s Place!!! :-D

Hi Everyone, I can remember my nephews going to Joe's when he was in that apartment on main street. Then he moved to a different building as he needed a larger place. Now he has moved into the building that is on Main Street. I was all for that move as well. I hope that anyone who reads this does vote for "Joe's Place" as he has done such an outstanding job with the kids & keeping them involved & as some would say on the right path in life! So like I said if any reads this & votes remember to tell other people abotu it & have them vote as well for this is such a great idea & I hope that he does get the money he needs to put in his kitchen! Joe's really needs this kitchen to be finished. There are amazing volunteers who show up weekly with food to feed youth who probably have not had alot of food all week never mind hot food. Not only do the volunteers feed these young adults but they also stay just to love them. Its an amazing place that needs this cash to go even further...

The more the kitchen is talked about the more I am learning that youth want to cook and be chef's what an awsome opprutinity it would be for Joe's Place to not only feed the youth but also teach them how to feed them selves. How does that old saying go? "give a man a fish he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish he will never go hungry again." The hope is not just feeding and teach youth how to take care of themselves but also to teach them how to be active member in society and in turn feeding many more people. Keep voting for this project it is well worth it.

Figured I'd come vote for your initiative Joe. You did your part in Bosnia, now your taking care of the kids at home. What you have going has a positive impact on the city and leads by example. You need to have each of your patrons get their family and friends to vote though. Back when you got beat up by those who didnt agree with your vision, some people had your back and you stayed your course. Thanks for providing a safe place all kids can go. Heres hoping its not too late to regain the lost ground on this Aviva project.

I am so grateful for all the time I've had with all the great people at Joe's Place. The staff have been an amazing influence to me and being with the younger crowd who drop in there has been tons of fun and a very good learning experience. I haven't seen this kind of thing anywhere else...where young people can come in to a safe environment and just hang out and talk about what's on their mind and receive comfort and guidance. It's like one big family just keeps growing and improving the character of MJ.

i have been with joes place for 8 years now. been going since i was twelve and i have made some major decisions that joe's place staff and joe himself have severely helped me with. i been on my own since around the age of 13 and ever since i been going to joes i have had a life fullfilling enjoyment. there are always ppl there to talk to when we (the youth) need it and for those who dont have the perfect life and family they have us to hold them up and we have them to hold this place together. without joes place in my life im sure i would have only followed the footsteps of my older brothers leadin right into drugs and gang violence. but being at joes turned me from that path and let me decide a better future for myself and i have invited so many friends to come with and they all love it!!! i hope we get this i really doooo!!!!! Joe's Place has become such a unique and important part of our community and has helped so many of our youth in so many ways. Until this competition began, I had no idea they'd functioned all these years without something as basic as a kitchen. Reality is, this group survives on donations, the donations only go so far and donations are never a certainty for any group. A kitchen means a great deal to Joe's Place as, besides being useful in feeding the kids and teaching them new skills, sales from this kitchen could create at least one small, more dependable stream of funding for this group. Call/email everyone you know and ask them to help by voting daily for this much needed kitchen.

Our son is one of the volunteers at Joe's Place, and we have heard so many good things about Joe's Place, in the youth that come there as well as in the lives of the staff/volunteers. There are young and older people working together for the Glory of God in this place. We are from Peterborough , Ontario, and we are encouraging all the people we know, on face book and in our church body to VOTE FOR JOE'S - HUNGRY FOR HOPE. We need Caronport to help. We need Regina , Saskatoon and beyond. E-mailing together this can happen!

I watched Joe a number of years back struggle to get this place going. He had a vision and a heart bigger than anyone else I have met in Moose Jaw. He is part of a solution and is trying to solve some of the problems that face the youth here in Moose Jaw. Both Joe and the kids struggling here need our support both online and by donations. Every bit counts. God Bless.

Show your support for Joe's Place. This project is so worthwhile! Joe and Karen and all the staff are completely dedicated to seeing the youth of Moose Jaw grow to their full potential. The ministries are geared toward helping youth find faith, forgiveness and purpose in their lives. Our two boys have gone to Joe's Place from the time they were old enough to attend. They still attend whenever they can. Having a kitchen addition will help Joe's Place continue to fulfill their purpose in the city of Moose Jaw.

I remember when Joes Place was actually at Joe's place, well, his aparment on main street. He was an army guy who liked good clean fun with as many people as would fit in his apartment - and it was wall to wall people. I remember being amazed there was no drinking, drugs, just this guy who loves fun and people. Joe is kind of like the crocodile hunter - he is passionate about adventure and full of life and it is infectious, kind of like this contest and the ones he did way back in his old apt on Main St. Keep it up Joe and family!

Our youth group from Manitoba went to Joe's Place for a Missions Trip/Youth Retreat a few weeks ago and I enjoyed it immensely. Not only was it so much fun enjoying all the activites available at Joe's Place, when I was job shadowing, one evening, it was super neat seeing everything from a Christian Volunteer way of looking at things. From praying in the prayer room, hanging out in 'coat check', and working in the 'kitchen'-if you can call it that- I was not surprised to see Jesus Christ being glorified in everything. Joe's Place is helping youth presently and eternally. It's a great but needy missions field. With God all things are possible!

I love being part of this place called "Joe's Place". I have been involved here since 2002 and am so grateful for all of the relationships that I've made through this place. Every week I help with the kitchen related activites--from organizing who cooks to helping do the dishes in our infamous Rubbermaid containers! It's a delight to be part of feeding so many people and keeping things in order...but would be so much better with a real sink!!! Thanks so much to everyone for voting! Keep up the good work!

OK, time for honesty. I'm appaled that a place like Moose Jaw can't muster more votes than this. People are sitting in front of their computers anyway, so it's not like they need to even get off their lazy arses to help a place that's done so much for their city and they can't even take a minute away from Facebook or World of Warcraft or Youtube to vote. Surely Joe's should be getting 5,000 votes a day, not 1,250. I bet you more than half of those 1,250 votes are coming from outside of Moose Jaw as it is.

I just have to add one more comment for those of you who don't know! Joe's Place was started by Joe when he was 20/21 yrs old; with just an invitation to drop by his warehouse apartment. Word spread that this was a safe & cool place to hang out and feel loved, with no strings attached. And eventually it became routine for the place to be filled to the brim on weekends - with youth looking for a place to have some good clean fun! I recall the first time my bro toured me through his apartment & I saw his living conditions - not so wonderful - yet here he was sharing what little he had with youth and making a difference. No funding, no help, no motives other than to be there for the youth in the community and big dreams of how he could make it better & even more exciting. I am proud to know that you are a part of my family, Joe & to see how your dreams have become a reality - that you are making a difference - not without sacrifice - but with enthusiasim and love for the young peopl

One small phone call for you can make a big difference and help Joe's Place fulfill its mandate...to make a difference in the lives of young people not only here in Moose Jaw, but beyond.

Dear Aviva judges, I thought you should know... the kitchen we're hoping for will not be just for serving wholesome meals (and cleaning up after), as important as that is. It will also be for giving our youth skills on how to prepare and serve healthy meals. Joe's Place has an exciting vision for how this kitchen can be used to make a difference in the lives of the youth we serve on a weekly basis. Thank you so much for this tremendous opportunity.

I'm coming over from Thirsty Church(acf1612) to cast a vote for your project; to say "HI" and congratulations to your group on making it into the Semi-finals. Our group is having a roller-coaster ride between 23rd and 25th place. If you wish, come have a look at see what we are all about. We welcome visitors to our posting and any support we can get over the next three days. We're proud of the support received from our small rural community of less than 200 people.

The truth of the matter is that if this project wins, another project will still benefit, as we are not looking for the entire $250k, merely a fraction of it. There would still be $200k left in the fund to disperse to other projects. If you're looking for high upside with low cost, this would be it. Joe's Place delivers more bang for the buck. Other projects want the whole $250k regardless of whether or not they'd actually need it to do what they're planning to do.

Just rec'd an e-mail from Premier Brad Wall..."Although I wish you all the best in the competition, due to the number of Saskatchewan entrants, it would be inappropriate for me, as Premier, to pledge my support to just one worthy organization." Joe's Place is the only one currently placing in the necessary top 25. Please, you other Saskatchewan entrants and your supporters, please vote for us too! Thank you!

Actually what the premier says is right. He can't be seen to be favouring one part of the province over the others. However, he could voice his support for all the SK projects, which would be a nice boost.

Dear judges, If you are reading this, please know that Joe's Place plays a significant role in making our city a better place. What Joe has done over the last 15 years is amazing and your support for this project would leverage what has already been developed to multiply the good things that happen here all the time. Thanks for considering this very worthy cause, and a project that is well developed and has so much local support already.

Hey, I agree with bjohns. This isn't just some vague idea or a hairbrained scheme "cooked up" over the weekend (pun intended). This is a solid organization that's proven it can take grants and donations and use them responsibly to help get youth back on track. They also have a bunch of stuff in place already and this money would be the final piece to put it all in place. That's money well spent if you ask me.

The Rice, they have no kitchen, but they hold regular events involving meals/banquets. Food is cooked off-site and carried in by volunteers, then dishes are carried off-site to be washed. Just having a kitchen would be a blessing in terms of serving the youth, but that kitchen would be used for so much more....they could use it to create sustainable funding for Joe's by holding such things as fundraising lunches as well as teaching the youth new work skills, etc. Thanks for voting :)

Honestly I don't know how you've managed, obviously a lot of dedicated staff, volunteers and supporters. I commend you. To respond to Rice: Joe's Place feeds youth every week because of our amazing volunteers who cook delicious home cook meals from their homes or local churches. They then transport the food in large crock pots across town. We wash dishes by boiling water and then washing the dishes in large rubbermaid bins. We need a kitchen because this is not ideal, but also we have dreams of expanding hope to more youth....watch our video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3qyUPnUWQY

• The wonderful comments and support from all across the country are simply amazing. Who would have thunk??? The networking and sharing and encouragement among communities has been beyond words and truly inspiring! Sure, there is the element of reaching out and trying to secure votes so that the special project that is near and dear to each of us makes it into the top 25 - the money will certainly go a long way to ensuring the project becomes a reality. But it goes much beyond that - way, way beyond actually. I suspect the individuals that get involved with these endeavors have a sense of community, commitment and caring for their fellow human beings. There are a number of worthy projects and good people and supporters connected to each. There has been a real sense of camaraderie, a bonding that has occurred, a spirit of giving and being able to help; to be able to make a difference. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, it is what Christmas is really about.

Greetings from the Thirsty Church ACF#1612 to say thank you for your support. We have been visiting you all along the way, as from the beginning we felt a connection as you are 'Hungry' and we are 'Thirsty'; however, we have not left a note each time we came to vote, as we feel each entry's page is for the purpose of promoting their own project. Before the voting ends and the comments disappear, we wanted to let you know that and how much we appreciated Justin's comment that he hopes we get our plumbing, as we likewise hope you get your kitchen. We are a tiny community of about 100 people and are working our tales off to stay in the top 25. If you have an extra second to vote to help us save this little non-denominational Church, it will be much appreciated. Thank you & Merry Christmas:)

I am asking my kids at school tomorrow to help support your idea, we have been actively voting for ideas for Mayerthorpe and High River as they are the only Alberta ideas and the kids can relate to rebuilding a playgorund and rebuilding our recreation centre which was lost to fire. I wish I would have taken the time to read your idea before now - I apologize. I was skimming through looking at the ideas in the 20-30 range and seeing if there was an idea that we could help support and get into the finals and yours is one I am adding to the list. I hope this helps you. If you go to the Mayerthorpe Idea you will see I am also asking all our voters to take the time to toss one your way. Good luck!

It's kind of sad...this is all coming to an end, this part of the contest, tomorrow. There has been a lot of time put into this by a lot of people. Especially our leader, Joe. An amazing dynamo of a guy. Totally respected by the youth. I remarked to my wife at last Friday's banquet...notice how the kids quiet down when Joe gets up to speak. It's deserved respect. Joe cares deeply for these young people and they know it. They are what this is all about. We fed about 50 youth tonight out of our non-kitchen. The new kitchen is going to be great. But it's the kids that really matter. Thanks to all of you for your support. Keep voting tomorrow!

I'm glued to the computer screen! Watching our progress. Hoping and praying! I already voted, but I'm going on Twitter trending topics and blip.fm asking for others to vote. For those unaware, Joe's Place puts on Voltage, a New Year's alternative for several hundred teens in our town. Always an exciting event. keeping many of our youth from doing that night what they might regret. Just another one of the many services Joe's Place offers the youth. Talked with my daughter-in-law in Vancouver...she's been voting daily! Do you have relatives and or friends you can call and remind?

Joe, we're cheering for you. Voting daily for you and supporting your ministry in prayer. Every time we pass your place on Main, we are amazed at what God is doing in the lives of the youth of our city. You NEED a kitchen in order to continue to minister to them, to train them in new areas, to offer a coffee shop we all can use, possibly, giving us a touching point between us olders and the youngers of our city! Blessings!

I also wanted to applaud you as being that "safe place" for ALL youth. One mother could not locate her son one evening and finally went down to Joe's Place where he was safe and enjoying his peers. No excuse for his not letting Mom know where he was, so he was in a bit of trouble, but he wasn't in the kind of trouble he could have been otherwise! Thanks for being there! When she spoke to you, you listened and promised to help. Thanks again from a friend of this family.

Heard it on the radio several times today..."All I need is a miracle, all I need is you (that part of a song followed by)...vote for Joe's Place!" And an explanation of the need for everyone to vote. The important thing to do now and in the upcoming hours till 11:00 tonight, since we've already voted, is to do what the politicians do...GOTV...get out the vote. How do we do that? E-mail friends. Call friends. Ask them if they voted. Be bold. Call them. Don't leave any stone unturned. 100 people reading this calling 100 friends equals 100 votes. It ain't over till...till 11:00!
dcembre 16, 2009 @ 7:37 EST
Joe's Place
Kent is very right. THIS IS NOT OVER! There are only a few votes separating 10 groups so a big surge could still knock us out....PLUS the higher we place the better the chances of the judges awarding us the money. Who can you call or e-mail. Only one day left to be annoying! Joe

I suppose everyone at Joe's is hard at voting, working up an appetite! Just under 2 hours of voting left. I sitting here sipping a medicinal, trying to stay calm. Whose heading to bed before 12AM EST? I thought not! Keep voting and supporting. It's heart warming to see the support we've been given today at Camp Triumph. Things are looking more promising than they did at this time last night, but as Yogi Berra said, "it ain't over til it's over", so we need to continue working hard, making sure everyone we know has voted today. I agree with triumph - please send support to our friends and dedicated supporters at Gabriola Island, acf3958, and The Thirsty Church, acf1612. Hopefully we can all hold our positions in the Top 25. Once again Thanks to all our supporters and Best of Luck. May we all be blessed with a spot in the TOP 25.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has voted. I heard Joe and crew were on CTV local news tonight. Missed that. :( Thanks, CTV, for letting people know about this work that's been going on for 15 years among the youth of Moose Jaw. Hey, if you're ever in the Jaw, come on by 402 Main Street North. Joe gives excellent tours! He might even let you climb the huge climbing wall. Why's that there? To give the youth a challenge and a chance to excel at something. There's a purpose behind everything that's done there. Even the kitchen! Not to just to feed. Also to train!

Sometimes it takes a little while to get the word out, but Joe worked hard to get the word out about this project and the people of Moose Jaw have come through with their votes the last couple of days. I think this shows that the citizens of this fine city value what Joe's Place does to improve the city through the lives of it's young people. Blessings on you Joe and Moose Jaw.

I can't begin to tell you how much I've enjoyed this whole process. A big thank you to Aviva for allowing us to get the good word out about what Joe's Place is doing for our city (and beyond). Do you know that many of our volunteers are college students who work with our youth here and later leave and become involved in similar youth works elsewhere? This work, in its fifteen years of operation, has had a profound widespread effect. Is there anyone you should be calling right now to encourage them to vote?

Congratulations! Joe's Place is obvously dedicated to supporting and improving the lives of young people. You epitomize the phrase" it takes a community to raise a child". The safe environment, nourishment, opportunities and activities you provide youth, will go a long way in raising the next generation of community minded citizens. Your committed volunteers, supporters and community will see this project gets done regardless, but the competition certainly provides a welcome opportunity for much need funds for our organizations. I knew the results were going to be posted in January but I wasn't really keeping close tabs. Saturday night I dreamt that Joe's Place won and got up to check my computer Sunday morning to find out it was almost time for the winners to be announced. I've always thought Joe and Joe's Place were winners. Way to go! Praise the Lord! May the good that Joe's Place does for kids continue for a long, long time. I've seen some of the kids from Joe's Place who were in crisis grow up to become outstanding adults because of the help, friendship and guidance given by Joe's Place staff.. God bless Joe's Place!
