To create a fun park that is accessible to children with disabilities, especially children in wheelchairs. We would like this playground to be a playground that does not segregate but includes all children regardless of their physical abilities. What it would offer each child is opportunity, opportunity to play, opportunity to swing, opportunity to rotate. This playground would be an extension and addition to the current playground facilities at the school.
We believe that every child should have equal access to good play opportunities. We would purchase equipment that would allow children with disabilities to play side-by-side with the able bodied. It would be a park for all children to have fun.
We would like to install new equipment that would be such as accessible Fun Hoop, or a Jenn swing, or speedy racer, bell panel, drag ramps, acessible seats, accessible tables, wide tread stair, rounded slides, a music centre, but most especially a ground cover that wheelchairs can move on.
This park would be open to the children atteding our school but also to the community. Everyone in Yellowknife would benefit from it.

We are a community that has limited access for inclusion opportunities for individuals in wheel chairs. This play ground would be our first and a great start for inclusion for everyone!

Wheel chair access should be to all places... lets start with the playground and kids... they will become adults one day who make decisions for the community/communities.

I think this is a fabulous idea! This will ensure access for everyone, and allow kids who are differently abled the ability to be kids and play together with kids who are already able to access normal playgrounds - and what an opportunity for growth adn coming together.

Some "sensory" toys would be good as well in a "fun" park

My 4 year old son attends preschool at NJ. He is in a wheelchair and would love to be able to have a playground which is accessible to him in Yellowknife. Thank you for your votes!

Awesome idea, our winters are long enough and people in wheelchairs in our City cannot always get around due to the snow that is not cleared from our sidewalks. Having wheelchair accessibility in this playground would ensure that children in wheel hairs can participate and play with other children rather than being segregated and left out, especially during the approximately 8 months of winter. Therefore, my idea for this playgound is that it should also be made accessible during our winter months. :)

I teach an amazing young man who would really benefit from an idea like this as he enjoys playing with his friends and participating in outdoor activities. He is a very positive young man who makes people around him smile and have a great time. Having a playground that he would be able to move around and enjoy various types of equipment is something that he deserves because of this positive attitude.

I work at N.J MacPherson and with children that are in wheel chairs and others who would benefit from this project. It would be so much easier to take the kids out and especially in the winter! Thank-you for helping.

I am certainly all for it. It's long overdue at any community or public use space that doesn't have wheel chair access.

I think its a great idea. It made me realize its something I've never thought about but how important it is to meet the needs of ALL children. It's something we've now begun and can not stop until we meet this need. Thanks Tina

Thanks everyone for voting and helping to raise awareness of this issue for NJ. There is a story in today's newspaper about this project and it was also raised by one of our Yellowknife MLAs in the Legislative Assembly this week. Let's keep voting!

I am very thankful that my kids are healthy and able to use their bodies fully. I enjoy, as I am sure most parents do, watching my kids play like kids should. I think it would be wonderful for those that are not as enabled physically to be able to share that bond with their children, parents, family, and friends. We need to look out for each other. Let’s show the kids now that race, color, ethnicity, and disability matter not so they can grow up respectful of all, including themselves.

This would be a very positive addition for Yellowknife -- a community without good facilities for kids with disabilities. Thanks, Tina, for your good work on this (and so much else!).

Awesome initiative -- but can the administrator (Tina?) upload a real photo of a kid? That might help draw attention -- and would look a lot better than the Aviva stock photo. I know you are crazy busy already with good work. But seeing a real kid will help make the point to people, and draw attention.

Hi all, This site goes by 24 hours, not the dates, so if you vote at 8pm one day it will not let you vote again until after 8pm the next day.
