Many children and youth with special needs are unable to participate in community recreational programs on their own. Many wish to integrate into typical programming not only to be active but to meet others and be a part of the community, to develop social skills and to just have fun with a variety of other participants in a controlled and safe environment.
The aim of Play Buddies is to have youth trained and supports in place to be able to offer 1:1 support for individuals with special needs so that they can help facillitate integration into local recreational programs.
This initiative would be to create the groundwork required to make the Play Buddies program work. It would be to - create a recruitment process to develop awareness in youth on the benefits of volunteering - develop a training program to train volunteers about the needs of those with additional needs, and their role to assist inclusion and how to best make that happen - develop methods for creating partnerships with local service providers/ support agencies looking for recreational opportunities for their clients - determine how to gather information for screening and create the boundaries of this program and what can reasonably be put in place to make this a safe and enjoyable experience for both the youth volunteers and the program participant requiring support. - include a training module / toolkit for program staff who will be teaching the recreational programs so that they can best work with the Play Buddy and their individual they are supporting as well as come up with ways to modify acivities so that all can participate - determine best practices for overall program supervision and support

I have 2 kids with autism who require 1:1 support to participate and to facilate integration. This idea represents a significant "chunk" of their needs in terms of living an active, healthy life, being a part of their communities and getting to know others and how to interact meaningfully. It is just as importantly, a way for others in the community to get to know and appreciate them as well.

I have an adult sister that is mentally challenged. It is very difficult to find activities for adults and young adults to participate in that isn't always costly for the family or may not be goverment funded. There are different levels of special needs participants. Some are higher functioning then others and can increase their quality of life be being intergrated into the comunities. I support anyone that is devoted in trying to help any of these participants into the community. All the Best!

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville under Micole's leadership has proactively extended its resources, including hiring and supervising well prepared and experienced summer support staff (1:1 counsellors) to provide a comprehensive and very welcoming inclusion program in its Day Camps and other Leisure Services. The commitment has been ongoing over a significant number of years. Through the Town's preparation and readiness to include and support individuals with an umbrella of devopmental and/ or physical disabilities families recognize that their child or adult child belongs and is valued. All the best, Micole and Jen, in your plans to maintain and extend the Town's Leisure Services through 'Play Buddies' and AVIVA, in support of a proven local service model and in response to well identified community needs, during a time when traditional provincial funding is strained to provide equitable family funding. More so you well recognize the long term benefits of inclusion for all childr
