Working with kids aged 5 to 19, the Scarborough Basketball Association reaches into at least five of the 13 priority neighbourhoods in Toronto (Kingston-Galloway, Malvern, Eglinton East-Kennedy Park, Scarborough Village, Dorset Park) through basketball.
The kids and youth come together because of basketball. This creates a unique opportunity to reach at risk young people, improve the health of the community as well as developing the game of basketball.
This project could allow the Scarborough Basketball Association to create programs to fight bullying; openly talk about ways to prevent and diffuse violence in our communities; and engage youth in discussions about potential future opportunities beyond becoming an NBA or WNBA player. By using basketball tournaments, practices and leagues as a forum to invite community leaders, inspirational speakers and home-grown heroes, the SBA hopes to use sport to develop not only basketball skills, but develop life skills in all aspects of a young person’s development.

I work with this organization and the management and the people involved with this organization are the best to work with and most caring I have seen to run an organization in this neighbourhood.

Bring people within a community together through sport, especially basketball, is such a simply but effective way of touching the lives of kids, their friends, parents and relatives.

I have been associated with the SBA for over 10 years, my two children and Husband also participate with the SBA, my Son is now a Sr. in Highschool and has been with the SBA since he was 7 years old, my daughter and Son both volunteer and participate in the team sports. This experience has been in valueable to them and their development to become responsible and positive citizens, they have learned a great deal about life, other cultures, other neighbourhoods, cities and towns through out Canada. If the SBA did not reach these youths and these neighbourhoods with their programs in the gym and in the classroom the malls of Eastern Tornoto and streets would be their playgrounds. Instead the youth associated with the SBA over 3000 children are on the courts learning about how to be confident, positive and respectful of others, along with raising the next generation of volunteers as many of these kids end up coming back to mentor, coach and impart their experiences of college and universi

My daughter Jessica, has been a force in the SBA for over 10 years and I have seen the difference that it makes in the lives of the children with whom she works. Hence, my support of the SBA. Come everyone, your vote counts, so vote and contribute to the positive future of our children and their children. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. This we can do!!!!

This idea is simply another example of SBA's leadership in the support and expansion of youth programs across the City of Toronto. Keep up the great work!
