Snacks in Packs

"Packing away childhood hunger one backpack at a time"

What is Snacks in Packs all about?

Snacks in Packs is a program with a BIG goal: to alleviate and eliminate childhood hunger in Ottawa.

Snacks in Packs is a program that aims to help support children facing food-insecurity when other resources are not available or accessible.

During the week, Food Banks and Community Pantries are open and children have access to school supports such as Breakfast and Lunch Programs, but what about on the weekends and during school/statutory holidays? Snacks in Packs is a program that is aimed at providing support when other resources are not available.

How does it work?

Step1 : Elementary school students are identified by their teachers, communities workers, school social workers,etc.. as needing food assistance/support.

Step 2: On the Friday before a weekend, or last day of school before a holiday, the participants are discreetly given a backpack filled with child-friendly,easy-to-prepare and nutritious foods to last them the specific period of time. The backpacks are also filled with other items if needed depending on the child's personal needs (ie; toothbrush, winter clothes,etc...) as well as a list of community resources to help bring awareness to those in need of the other supports available.

Of course there are a lot of logistics/details, for example volunteers to fill the backpacks and evaluation systems to ensure that the program is achieving it's goals, but- where there is a will there is a way!

Why is a program like Snacks in packs important to the Ottawa community?

The Ottawa Food Bank serves 16,000 children every month. Over 40,000 youth and children living in Ottawa live below the poverty line. Most food assistance resources in our community are not open on the weekends and during holidays. For many young children, the main support they receive comes from programs at their school, which are not available to them on weekends and during school holidays.

Childhood hunger is an issue in our community but we can work together to end it!

The Inspiration:

Feeding America runs a program called the BackPack Program and has had incredible successes. Currently there are 1600 program sites in operation across the US. These BackPack programs serve over 70,000 children every year. Imagine the opportunities for the expansion of programs like Snacks in Packs in Canada! The success of the BackPack Program inspired this idea and I am very excited by the possibility of trying it in Ottawa!

The impact this grant could have?

HUGE! My hope is to pilot Snacks in Packs in an elementary school that would benefit from a program like this. There are many identified schools in Ottawa that have a high population of students living below the poverty line and it is so exciting to think of the possibilities this program could offer and the impact it could have on improving the lives of children! Although my long-term plan is to obtain permanent funding from a granting organization or eventually gain municipal or provincialgovernmental support, this grant would help lay the foundation for this program and would allow for a pilot project to be run,so that we can get started packing away childhood hunger!

We can pack away childhood hunger one backpack at a time!

Thank you so much and have a great day! Alyse Schacter
