Preserve our town's historic locomotive 6218

Our locomotive was presented to Fort Erie in 1973. It has been outside on static display at our rail museum since then. Thirty eight years exposed to the elements have taken their toll on this famous locomotive. It was the last coal powered steam engine to run in Canada. 6218 became well known as an excursion engine in the 1960's. It is our symbol of Fort Erie's rich rail heritage. The locomotive needs sand blasting, boiler repairs, priming and painting as well as a new jacket to cover the boiler. A restored engine would enhance the rail museum and draw more visitor's to our area. The surrounding neighbourhood would be revitalized by the project as well. The local businesses would benefit from the increased tourist presence. The preservation of 6218 would bring cultural and economic benefits as well as restore community pride in our town's history.
