spay/neuter education program

Aperçu:

Goal is to significantly reduce the number of healthy, loving cats and dogs which are euthanized every year because of pet overpopulation. Idea is a massive advertising campaign describing how easily we can effect change in this area and how it is in the hands of responsible pet owners. Throughout the pet rescue community there is absolute agreement that this is the only way to effectively combat the pet overpopulation issue. This campaign would educate people on just how much difference one litter makes. Many people do not spay or neuter because they feel that their one litter of puppies or kittens will not make a difference in the overall pet population. As the campaign will illustrate, ONE litter can quickly become hundreds and then thousands of homeless pets. In fact that ONE litter IS the reason for the pet overpopulation problem. According to published literature, In just seven years, ONE unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats. That's nearly HALF A MILLION. One unspayed dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs. The proof is in the sad fact that all over Canada animal shelters are full nearly all the time. For some pet owners, cost is the main reason they do not spay/neuter. There are currently initiatives to help with the cost through organizations such as the SPCA but many people do not know about them. The 'stop smoking' and 'impaired driving' campaigns made a significant impact on our way of thinking about those two issues. A campaign for spay/neuter could quickly do the same for this issue. A real difference can be made and it can be made quickly. Once responsible people get the message and spay/neuter their pet the reduction in unwanted animals at shelters will happen quickly.
